The long, lazy days of summer... Kids look forward to a break from their studies, while parents worry that all that “doing nothing” will wreak havoc on their performance when school resumes in the fall.

Learning shouldn’t stop during the summer months. Luckily, it doesn’t have to, as parents have a wide variety of options to help their children have fun while they learn, all summer long. Whatever a child’s interests and abilities, parents can find a summer camp to fit his or her needs.

Many parents turn to science-based camps when making their summer selections. Science camps can introduce children to a world of discovery while sparking their imaginations.

In an age when science is as vital as reading, writing, and arithmetic, science camps help develop a vital skill.

Take Lakehill’s Science Olympiad Camps for example. These camps are full of STEM activities, designed especially for Middle School students. The curriculum is engaging, allowing campers to experience how science works in the real world. Build air-powered bottle rockets and balsa wood airplanes that glide great distances. Design bridges and see how many buckets of sand they can hold without breaking. Develop and test your own original time-keeping devices. Enjoy science-based games like Science Taboo and Build It Write It with LEGO blocks. Create computer games using the MIT Scratch programming system. The sky’s the limit in these camps!

About Lakehill Summer Camps

Lakehill Summer Camps are unique in offering quality, teacher-led camps at an affordable price, with free before-camp and after-camp care available every day.

Lakehill Summer Camps offer programs for boys and girls entering kindergarten through grade 12, with weekly sessions beginning June 6 and ending August 5, 2016.

In addition to science camps, Lakehill offers a variety of camps in visual and performing arts, crafting and building, film making, and more.

There are a variety of sports camps, including cheerleading, disc golf, and soccer. With 85 different camps available, there truly is something for everyone.

Camps are $240 per week for a half-day session, and $315 per week for a full-day session. Free before-camp and after-camp care is available.

Camps will be offered at both the main campus and at the Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center. Online registration is now open and programs are filling fast. More information and easy online registration is available at http://www.lakehillprep.org/summer_camps.html.

Every year, the staff at Lakehill Preparatory School dream up camps that make me wish I were a kid again! I get so many calls and emails from parents asking about summer camps. They are amazed that we don't just offer academic prep camps, but instead emphasize camps that are just a little different, a little outside the box.

Last year's Legendary Latin America camp has returned this year, this time for a younger crowd beginning with rising first graders. The sounds, flavors, and stories make me believe I'm sitting around a campfire in the jungle, or maybe high up on a mountain, hearing ancient tales of heroism and magic.

Christmas in July camp lets campers find shelter from the sweltering sun as they pine for cooler weather while crafting ornaments, wreaths, and other keepsakes. I know I'm always busy, busy, busy during the months leading up to the winter holidays. What a great idea to turn the summer doldrums into an opportunity to get a jump start on the holidays!

Tweens and teens can't get enough of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical problem solving, and Science Olympiad will deliver more STEM adventures than you can launch a rocket at! With an emphasis on hands-on problem solving, this camp will keep your child wondering and thinking!

Culinary curiosity leads to new flavor discoveries to share with family and friends. Tasty Tapas and Treats camp explores the sweet and the savory  finger foods of Spain to bring all the senses on an adventure of learning and deliciousness. Campers will make treats while learning about their cultural significance, and will even be able to take samples home to share with the family!

Sadly, none of these camps are available to curious-minded adults. You'll just have to enroll your children and let them share their adventures and discoveries with you after camp each day!

Board Chair Beverly Godbey and Headmaster Roger Perry break ground at Lakehill.

Lakehill Preparatory School began a new chapter in its history today with a formal groundbreaking ceremony for a new expansion project at school’s main campus in Lakewood.

Lakehill students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff joined board members and donors to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new 16,000 square-foot facility. An additional 8,000 square feet of existing space will also be renovated. The entire project will be completed in time for the start of the 2017-18 school year.

Lakehill Headmaster Roger L. Perry kicked off the ceremony by talking about the impact this development will have on the community. “This groundbreaking is the culmination of significant efforts with our neighbors to make this possible. We appreciate their response and encouragement. Improving our school will have a positive effect on our entire community.”

Perry was joined by Lakehill Board Chair Beverly Godbey, along with Board members Chuck Burch, Carolyn Howard, Chris Janning, Colleen McCall, Brad Robinson, Irwin Thompson, Matt Trent, Dana Turner, and Brent Walker, Parent Faculty Club President Barb Witherite, and architect Jon Rollins.

"I am so appreciative to those donors to the Opening Doors Capital Campaign who showed their commitment to our school early on," Perry said. “Everyone will have the opportunity to be a part of this exciting effort and to have an impact on our students for generations to come."

The Dallas City Council unanimously approved Lakehill Preparatory School's zoning request for a planned development district and new facility enhancements on January 12, 2016. The vote came at the conclusion of nearly two years of preparation, which included feasibility studies of space needs, legal issues, and funding requirements, numerous meetings with neighbors and members of the community, and, ultimately, approval by the City Planning Commission and City Council.

The expansion will produce new lab spaces for science, writing, and computer science, as well as an art studio. It will also provide new classrooms, meeting and event rooms, and administrative offices. A centerpiece of the project is a 5,000 square-foot inner courtyard that will provide outdoor classroom and performance space.

Perry says that these dramatic enhancements will offer increased opportunities for all Lakehill students. “We will be able to expand and strengthen the programs we offer our students.”

Good Fulton Farrell is the design firm for the building project. The construction management company is Highland Builders.

Lakehill is a top-rated independent school offering a college preparatory curriculum to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. With current enrollment at its highest level since the school opened its doors in 1971, the existing facility has reached capacity. “After 45 years of serving families in east Dallas, the opportunity to welcome even more children is inspiring,” said Perry.

“There is such dynamic growth happening in the Lakewood area,” Perry added. Everywhere you look, residents are enhancing their own homes. We are thrilled to be enriching the neighborhood with a beautiful new facility. This expansion is a win-win for us and for the community.”

“Thousands of students over the history of the school and many community leaders, past and present, have allowed us to take this major step for the benefit of the entire community. We are proud of the reputation that the school has built and are looking forward to the future.”

Construction on the new facility begins May 23.

Lakehill Preparatory School is hosting an Admission Coffee for parents of children entering kindergarten through fourth grade on Tuesday, May 24, at 9:00 a.m. The Coffee will be held at Lakehill’s Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center, located at 7401 Ferguson Road, Dallas, 75228. To reserve a space at the coffee or to schedule a tour for other grades, please contact Lisa Bracken, Director of Admission, at 214.826.2931 or email admission@lakehillprep.org.

Established in 1971, Lakehill Preparatory School is an academic community dedicated to the whole student. Lakehill combines a robust, college preparatory curriculum with opportunities for personal growth, individual enrichment, and community engagement.

Small class sizes ensure a supportive learning environment and personal attention. Students at Lakehill have all of the opportunities available in a much larger school, but are able to thrive in a supportive setting where they can concentrate on learning. Students benefit from a rigorous academic environment, while being supported by the strong sense of family, community, and spirit that Lakehill provides. As a result, this small school feels very much like a big family.

Lakehill’s tradition of excellence is not confined solely to the classroom. In keeping with Lakehill’s desire to develop well-rounded citizens, students are encouraged to take advantage of a wide variety of extracurricular offerings. Through participation in a myriad of clubs, student organizations, honor societies, athletics, and community service projects, opportunities for assuming leadership roles abound.

Lakehill students all go on to pursue education at a higher level, and are accepted into Ivy League schools, top research universities, liberal arts colleges, renowned art institutions, and international universities. What is most important, however, is the process of pairing the student with the right school. Through an extremely successful college counseling program, Lakehill works together with every family, discussing each student’s dreams, abilities, needs, and interests when choosing a school.

On April 4, Visual Arts Chair Scott Boles took 23 selected works of art created by Lakehill students in his drawing, painting, and sculpture classes, work from Cat Huitt's ceramics, weaving, and printmaking classes, and Sacha Troxler's yearbook cover to Waco, Texas, for the 2016 TAPPS State Art Championship competition.

Competing against 29 other Division 2A schools from the state of Texas, nine Lakehill students placed high enough to accumulate 80 points and claim the Runner-up title of the State Championship. Lakehill students won 18 medals in the eight categories they entered. This number is even more impressive considering they were competing against a total of 619 entries in the categories they entered.

Students were excited about the event as well, although they admitted it was challenging. "I thought I was smart when I walked in the door," said Asher Chamoy. "These questions are hard!" The most common response: "My brain hurts...but in a good way!"

Five Lakehill seventh graders who elected to take the SAT or ACT as part of the Duke University Seventh Grade Talent Search recently received State Recognition, with one student qualifying for Grand Recognition.

Fifty-six percent of Lakehill's test takers qualified for special recognition.  Lakehill congratulates Christian BarefootAsher ChamoyKeegan Clendenin,Matthew McCall, and Sarah Smith for their outstanding achievements. All five students received state recognition. Additionally, Clendenin received Grand Recognition, the highest honor in the program.
The Duke University Seventh Grade Talent Search identifies academically talented seventh graders based on their standardized test scores. Candidates are then invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. The goal is to provide them with information about their abilities while introducing them to a network of services and enrichment programs.

These five Lakehill students will be honored on May 7 at a Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) State Recognition Ceremony at the University of North Texas. They have also been invited to participate in a Duke TIP Summer Program. Clendenin has also been invited to a Grand Recognition ceremony on May 16 at the Duke University campus.

Lakehill third graders had a special treat on April 18 when State Representative Ken Sheets spoke to them as part of their study of Texas History and Government. The students even got to sign a copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The visit was arranged by Lakehill parents Tricia and Jonathan Neerman

"It was wonderful to watch learning come to life in the classroom," said third grade teacher Meredith Sauer. "Representative Sheets had the third grade students up out of their seats, voting on bills as House members and Senators. In less than an hour, I felt that the students gained a greater appreciation for what it means to be contributing citizens and proud Texans.
