White Rock Rowing Men's Junior Quad wins silver at the Head of the Hooch

White Rock Rowing Takes Texas and Tennessee by Storm

White Rock Rowing (WRR) continues its rise as a fierce competitor in the region and on the national stage. The crew positioned itself as the top boathouse from the Dallas area and third in the state in the point standings at the Head of the Hooch, the nation’s second-largest regatta. All of this is following an outstanding winning streak at Head of the Colorado in Austin, and Head of the Oklahoma where juniors and masters contributed to the most impressive results in its fall racing history.

In Austin, juniors and masters teams continued their winning streak bringing home 6 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals and won 3 coveted medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze at the Head of the Hooch. While all of these results are noteworthy, the medals won at Head of the Hooch, the nations second largest regatta with over 2,000 entries, saw only one other Dallas crew team medal in one event.

We take pride in our junior athletes impressing college recruiters from around the country. WRR alumni include rowers at Brown University, University of Texas, University of Massachusetts, Purdue, University of Tennessee, Temple University, University of Oklahoma, and the University of Delaware among others.

WRR is and has always been, since its mission began ten years ago, committed to giving scholarships and financial aid to juniors who want to discover the sport of rowing. We welcome all high school and middle school students to join us at our Learn to Row Day this Thanksgiving Break, Monday, November 20th from 10:00 – noon at the White Rock Boathouse on White Rock Lake. For more information see our website at whiterockrowing.org

Congratulations to Kaira Lay, Sam Prado, Connor Alexander, Drew Ellis, Will Schweizer, Andrew Schweizer and Luis Prado for their outstanding results at Head of the Hooch.

White Rock Rowing Triumphant Debut at the World’s Largest Regatta

White Rock Rowing (WRR) Junior Varsity Women and Masters raced in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on October 22 in Boston. The HOCR is one of the nation’s premier rowing events, featuring over 11,000 athletes from around the world who compete annually on the winding, highly technical 3-mile course.

WRR Varsity Women’s double partners, Sam Prado and Kaira Lay, finished 8th out of 47 crews in their debut on the Charles. From the onset of the race, the girls established an ambitious pace and skillfully maneuvered around competition from around the nation. By the last 900 meters, they were passing boats that began two minutes before them, securing an impressive TOP 10 FINISH TIME and immediately qualifying an entry in next year’s race.

“It was incredible to see White Rock athletes competing and thriving at the Head of the Charles and next year we will hopefully see more,” said Head Coach Ed Golding.

In addition to the junior women’s double, coach Golding raced in the highly competitive Men’s Masters 8+ with Cambridge Boat Club, bringing home a coveted 4th place medal. Tom Carr, a long-standing member of the White Rock Rowing community, also raced in the Men’s Grand Masters Singles, placing 18th out of 51 entries. The City of Dallas can take pride in the success of these athletes that represent us so well in national competitions.

After receiving 11 team medals in the recent OKC Regatta, WRR continues it’s impressive season in Austin this weekend to compete at the Head of the Colorado and the following weekend in Chattanooga at the Head of the Hooch.

White Rock Rowing’s (WRR) Women’s Varsity Pair and Men’s Varsity Quad qualified for the US Rowing Youth Nationals held in Sarasota, Florida from June 9 to 11.

During the three-day regatta, the Women’s Varsity Pair of Kaira Lay (Lay Academy) and Sam Prado (Lake Highlands High School), raced the country’s best 22 high school crews, finishing fourth in their time trial before securing a starting spot in the Grand Finale with a second-place finish in Saturday’s semi-finals. WRR finished in a formidable fourth place in the Grand Final, racing with the nation’s six fastest women’s pairs.

Connor Alexander (Lakehill Preparatory) Drew Ellis, Andrew and Will Schweizer (Woodrow Wilson High School) raced the top 23 quads the United States has to offer.  After finishing third in their time trial, the crew narrowly missed qualifying for the Grand Finale by placing fourth in their semi-final. They finished the regatta with an open-water-win in Sunday’s B Final ranking them seventh nationally.

“It was terrific just to qualify 2 boats for this race. These White Rock rowers did their club, their families and themselves proud by racing with all they had in all 6 races down the 2017 National Championship race course and ending up in 4th and 7th in the country in their respective events.  The boy’s quad had the highest finish of any men’s team boat in Dallas and the girl’s had the highest finish of any team boat in the great state of Texas”, said Ed Golding, White Rock Rowing’s head coach.

US Rowing Youth Nationals saw more than 1,800 athletes from 133 clubs and high school rowing programs from 106 cities racing at the highest level of competition for their age group.

White Rock Rowing Host Wounded Warrior Project

White Rock Rowing (WRR) was selected as the host for a Learn To Row for nearly 60 injured veterans, as part of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Soldier Ride, on Saturday, Sept. 12th. . For all of the participants this was their first experience with rowing.

Nearly 60 Wounded Warriors took part in a life changing, 34-mile cycling event through Dallas and Ft Worth. On Friday, September 11, the soldiers cycled the first 16-mile leg of their ride in Ft. Worth. Saturday, the group rode 18 miles through Dallas, ending at White Rock Boathouse to cap off their active weekend by learning to row.

This was an incredible opportunity for WRR to show their ongoing support for our veterans, and to introduce them to a sport that has had such an impact on so many who participates in it.

“It was a tremendous honor to coach the men and women from the Wounded Warrior Project. Despite the challenges they face every day, they aren’t afraid to seek new adventures that prioritize physical, mental, and emotional fitness through sport and teamwork, they are a true inspiration”, said Rachel Spielberg, Women’s Head Coach at White Rock Rowing. The soldiers that participated were quick to learn, tough as nails, and didn’t give up, traits that veterans inherently posses in work and in life.

“White Rock Rowing has been committed to their adaptive rowing program, and this was unquestionably one of the most extraordinary days at our Boathouse. To be in the presence of so many Wounded Warriors that personify the inspiration of sacrifice, and perseverance, and show us the true meaning of dedication was inspiring,” said Mary Condon, the White Rock Rowing specialized Adaptive Head Coach. The smiles on all the faces said it all, and White Rock Rowing was honored to be a part of this event through the Wounded Warrior Project.

About Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride: Soldier Ride often serves as an introductory program for WWP veterans. The national program brings service members together for a long weekend focused on physical health, wellness, and healing. In addition to cycling, they will participate in activities that supplement their journey toward a healthy lifestyle. Veterans will learn how to prepare a healthy meal during a cooking class, as well as physical activities like golf, white water and adaptive rowing. What may appear as a fun weekend getaway actually serves as a retreat to provide veterans with an opportunity to lean on one another for support and the empowerment they need to take on civilian life. More information on Soldier Ride is available at soldierride.org

About White Rock Rowing: White Rock Rowing offers a variety of programs for youth, adults and adaptive rowers at White Rock Boathouse on White Rock Lake. Starting in 2005, White Rock Rowing has been promoting teamwork, and leadership. Since its inception, WRR has built a rowing community whose mission is to put oars and opportunities in the hands of those who would otherwise not have the chance to row. Both novice and experienced rowers are welcome. For more information about getting out on the water, visit our website at whiterockrowing.org
