For the third year in a row, the Woodrow Wilson Wildcat swim team is sending swimmers to the UIL Swimming & Diving State Meet. At the Region 4-5A Swimming and Diving Championships on February 3-4, Wildcat 1st place girls 400 freestyle relay team, 2nd place girls 200 medley relay team, 2nd place girls 200 freestyle relay team, 1st place 100 backstroke and 3rd place 200 IM swimmer Caroline North, 2nd place 50 free swimmer Lawson Freeman, and 3rd place diver Anna Scherger all qualified to compete at the state meet which will be held at the Texas Swim Center in Austin on February 17-18. The champion 400 freestyle relay team consists of co-captains, Lawson Freeman and Caroline North, Noelle Martinez and Abbie Giles, 200 medley relay members are Claire and Helen Agee, Macie Burgard, and Emma Elkman, and 200 free relay team members are Freeman, North, Giles and Claire Agee.

The Wildcats prolonged their successful season with the girls swim team coming in 2nd overall in the region. Freeman also finished 3rd in 100 free, Martinez placed 6th in 200 free and 7th in 100 free, Giles placed 3rd in 50 free and 6th in 100 free, Burgard was 7th in 100 breaststroke and 10th in 200 IM, Claire Agee was 7th in 50 free and 8th in 100 free, Helen Agee was 4th in 500 free and 6th in 100 backstroke, and Elkman was 6th place in 100 fly and 9th in 50 free. Other notable swims include Camille Miranda-Estrada’s 10th place in 100 fly, Emily Lawrence’s 11th place finish in 200 free, Claire Gustafson’s 9th place and Annabelle Furrh’s 11th place in 500 free, and Peyton Scoville’s 11th place in 100 breaststroke.

The boys 200 medley relay team, consisting of captain Brian Arnold, Javier Herrera, Adam Becker and Thomas Burnam, finished in 3rd place and the 200 free relay team of Arnold, Herrera, Burnam and Sean Swift earned a 4th place finish, while the boys team placed 6th overall in the region. Other notable swims include Becker’s 3rd place finish in 100 breaststroke, Arnold’s 4th in 100 breaststroke and 11th in 50 free, Herrera’s 10th place in 100 free and 14th in 50 free, Matthew Gresback’s 13th place in 100 free and 9th place in 100 breaststroke, Swift’s 11th place in both the 200 and 500 free, Alec Pfundheller’s 11th place in 100 breaststroke, and Burnam’s 9th place in 100 backstroke.

The team is coached by Pablo Lara and Brook Varner, and they will push their 6am daily workouts to prepare for the state competition in Austin. Complete results from the regional meet will be posted, when available, at woodrowwildcats.org.
