Little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Little boys are made of frogs and snails and puppy dogs tails. Even from the start, little boys and little girls are different. As we grow into adults those differences continue, including how our bodies react to a heart attack.

Heart attack symptoms displayed by men and women are considerably different. When a woman has a heart attack she may experience nausea, overwhelming fatigue and dizziness. Her warning signs of an impending heart attack could include shortness of breath, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is especially true for women and heart disease. Admittedly, some heart disease risk factors are beyond our control, such as family history and age. After menopause, a woman’s chance of developing heart disease soars because her body’s production of estrogen drops. But you can take an active role in preventing cardiovascular disease by managing your risk factors.

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Lower your cholesterol.
  • Maintain a normal weight.
  • Exercise.
  • Manage your diabetes, if you have the condition.

Having just one of the risk factors for heart disease can be dangerous. But having multiple risks is even more serious because risk factors tend to intensify the effects of others and increase your chances of developing a heart condition. To learn more about your risk for developing heart disease, take the free, online Heart Quiz for Women at www.DoctorsHospitalDallas.com/HeartQuizforWomen.

In honor of National Go Red for Women Day, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake is offering free red dress lapel pins to help raise awareness of women and heart disease. Call 866-764-3627 for your free pin today.

The choices you make today will impact your life tomorrow. This may sound like advice a mother gives her children, but it is especially true when it comes to taking care of your heart. While some risk factors for developing heart disease are beyond our control, such as age, race or family history, certain lifestyle choices we make in our 20s, 30s and 40s will definitely impact the quality of life in our 50s, 60s and 70s.

Heart disease – and heart attack – is not just for men. It’s the number one cause of death in women over the age of 25 and kills nearly twice as many American women than all types of cancer, including breast cancer.

Fortunately, you can take steps now to prevent heart disease and enjoy a healthier life in the years to come by:

  • Not smoking.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Eating a nutritious diet.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight.

You also can attend a free, baseline heart screening for women only that will provide the information you need to possibly prevent heart disease and related problems. The screening includes a blood glucose test, blood cholesterol check, blood pressure monitoring, weight evaluation, and personal health assessment.

Date:               Saturday, February 4

Time:               8:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Location:        Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake

Each year Americans make their list of resolutions for the New Year, and each year many forget those resolutions within a short time. Since many of the most popular resolutions are health-related, Alexander Amby, M.D., family practice physician on the medical staff at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, offers tips for keeping your resolutions this year.

  • Write it down. By putting the resolution on paper, you’re making it more concrete. It may help to post your list where you can see it every day.
  • Keep it short. Don’t put too many resolutions on your list. A short and simple list is much more achievable than one that starts to look like the Gettysburg Address.
  • Break it down. If you want to lose weight, break that resolution down into smaller goals that you can achieve. Most people tend to lose one to two pounds per week with dieting and exercise, so a sub-goal of losing six pounds in one month can be done.
  • Make it personal. Your resolution should be something you want to achieve.
  • Stay positive. Practice positive self-talk as you begin working to reach your goal. Tell yourself what you are doing to help meet your objective.
  • Get some support. Ask your friends and family to help you achieve your goal. They can provide motivation when you need it and cheer you on from the sidelines.

“Regardless of your resolution, the process of taking the goal from thought to action is the same,” adds Dr. Amby. “If you need help, ask your doctor for advice on ways to stop smoking, lose weight, and other health matters.”

Every year, approximately 600,000 American women undergo hysterectomies. The procedure to remove a woman’s uterus is the second most common surgical procedure performed in the United States on women of child-bearing age, and one in three women will have had one by age 60.

Hysterectomies can treat a number of medical issues — endometriosis, cancer, excessive uterine bleeding, uterine prolapse, chronic pelvic pain — and can also be performed several different ways. While a traditional abdominal hysterectomy requires a long incision to the abdomen, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake also offers a laparoscopic, minimally invasive version of the procedure.

“We are always looking to offer the women we serve some of the best options available. Women may find several benefits from having a minimally invasive hysterectomy,” said Ronald Bristow, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist on the medical staff at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “The laparoscopic procedure involves a much smaller incision than the traditional hysterectomy surgery, and patients also experience less post-operative pain and a faster recovery time.”

Recovery from a hysterectomy will depend on the type of surgery. Most women spend at least one to two days in the hospital. Abdominal surgery recovery takes about four to six weeks, while laparoscopic surgery recovery will last three to four weeks.

“Laparoscopic surgery requires special training, experience and equipment, so not all surgeons are skilled to perform it,” adds James Schermerhorn, M.D., obstetrician/gynecologist on the medical staff at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “We’re proud that we can offer this important option to our patients — it’s yet another illustration of our strong commitment to quality patient care available at Doctors Hospital.”

Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake Offers New ER Service Powered by InQuickER

When you’re sick or injured, waiting for hours at the ER is the last thing you want. Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake has a solution with InQuickER. The service allows patients to reserve a place at the ER online while waiting in the comfort of their own homes.

To hold an online ER position, patients are required to pay a fee, complete an online form, and arrive at the projected treatment time. If you haven’t been seen by a health professional within 15 minutes, InQuickER will refund your online fee in full.

“We know people want more convenience and communication in the ER experience,” explains Dale D Serie, RN, Emergency Department Director at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “With this service, users enjoy the convenience of choosing where they wait and a projected time to see a healthcare professional in the emergency room."

According to Kr. Keith Lepak, associate medical director of emergency medicine at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, the Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake utilizes InQuickER to create a more efficient service for patient satisfaction.

InQuickER does not affect the wait times of other emergency room patients, nor does it allow certain individuals to “cut” in front of others. Additionally, if the projected treatment time changes due to an influx of patients requiring priority treatment, the user will be notified and given an alternate time, or a refund.

The new service is only intended for individuals who have non-life threatening medical conditions. Patients requiring immediate medical treatment should go immediately to the nearest emergency department or call 911.

For more information about holding your place online, please go to www.DoctorsHospitalDallas.com/InQuickER

At Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, the fee to use these services is $9.99.

Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake has received the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. The recognition signifies that Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake has reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance for at least 24 months to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology secondary prevention guidelines for heart failure patients.

Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations.

“Patients know that when they come to Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake for cardiac care they will benefit from the clinical excellence and quality care we provide,” says Melbert Hillert, Jr., M.D., cardiology medical director at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “Assuring the highest possible standards for cardiovascular care is important to improving quality throughout the industry and building a healthier community.”

Under Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants while in the hospital. They also receive smoking cessation counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged if appropriate.

“The full implementation of national heart failure guideline recommended care is a critical step in preventing recurrent hospitalizations and prolonging the lives of heart failure patients,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. “The goal of the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program is to help hospitals like Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake implement appropriate evidence-based care and protocols that will reduce disability and the number of deaths in these patients. Published scientific studies are providing us with more and more evidence that Get With The Guidelines works.  Patients are getting the right care they need when they need it. That’s resulting in improved survival.”

“Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country and implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program will help us accomplish this goal by making it easier for our professionals to improve the long-term outcome for these patients,” said G. Scott Manis, FACHE, chief executive officer at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake.

Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes. The program includes quality-improvement measures such as care maps, discharge protocols, standing orders and measurement tools. This quick and efficient use of guideline tools will enable Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake to improve the quality of care it provides heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart failure hospital admissions.

According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure.  Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure.
