As people across the country prepare for haunted houses, trick or treating and fun with friends, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – White Rock offers the following tips to keep all of your little witches and wizards safe during the festivities:

Choose a safe costume

The number-one consideration in a choosing a costume is to make sure he or she can see. If it obstructs your child’s vision, keep looking. Face paint and head ornamentation is a great substitute for a full mask and is much more comfortable and safe. Length is also an important factor. Make sure it won’t interfere with walking or cause tripping on stairs. Finally, being fire resistant is an added bonus when your child may be trailing around candle-lit pumpkins on steps.

Visibility

Don’t forget to pick up glow sticks that fasten around wrists, ankles, necks and even belt loops. They don’t detract from the costume, and make your little one more visible. Even if you’re in the city, a flashlight is crucial to prevent trips on sidewalks and curbs, as well as to alert passing vehicles.

Supervise

Tonight is not the best night to turn your kids loose in the neighborhood to run with friends. Find another adult or older sibling to hand out candy at your house and stick with your young trick-or-treaters. Don’t forget your own flashlight and a back-up bag in case their bag tears.

Fun, Safe Events

If you’re looking for an even safer way to spend Halloween, consider taking your child to a mall, community event, church party or even host your own special Halloween party. These controlled environments may be a safer alternative and still loads of fun.

Pumpkin Carving

When it’s time to carve the pumpkin, safe and child-friendly tools are available at most stores. Supervision is still required, however, as children can always find ways to get hurt. If possible, have them help you design the image, and then you do the cutting. They can do the fun part of cleaning out the pumpkins and saving the seeds to dry for healthy snacking later on. Using an inexpensive, battery-operated tea light instead of a candle eliminates the fire hazard.

Preventative Habits

Watch what candy is given to your child at which house, so if something is questionable later on, you will remember if it came from a friendly neighbor that you know well. Toss anything that is unwrapped or homemade. Talk to your child beforehand so he or she knows to stay on sidewalks, wait for you to cross at corners, and walk up to houses that have porch lights on. In the excitement of the moment, kids will often dash unexpectedly or step off onto rough terrain.

For Life’s Unexpected Emergencies

When an unplanned health event occurs, you can trust our full-time, board–certified emergency medicine physicians on the medical staff and specially trained nurses and technicians to help. Our average patient wait for treatment by a physician is less than 15 minutes. And that should make you feel better. For most women, life can get complicated at times. The to-do list never seems to get any shorter. Women today have so many responsibilities that it is easy to put the kids, the husband, the job, even the dog, ahead of your own health. But we need to be at our best and in good health to manage it all. The Imaging Center on Lovers Lane, a department of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – White Rock, makes it easy to fit getting your annual mammogram into your busy life with convenient hours, including early morning, evening and Saturday appointments. You can schedule your mammogram by calling 214.324.6220. Most appointments take 30 minutes or less.

3D Mammography in East Dallas

“3D mammography provides greater sensitivity when screening for breast abnormalities than 2D mammography,” said David Zorinsky, MD, a breast-fellowship-trained radiologist on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – White Rock who specializes in breast imaging. “Studies published in The Journal of the American Medical Association shows that 3D mammography decreases the number of false-positive results, as well as the need for recall testing, which can be very stressful for women.”

Unlike traditional mammography, 3D mammography creates multiple breast images in just seconds, allowing providers to examine breast tissue one layer at a time. 3D mammography is especially helpful to women with dense breast tissue because it provides a clearer picture.

The Benefits of 3D Mammography:

  • Clearer view through dense breast tissue, and better accuracy in determining size, shape and location of abnormalities in the breast
  • Fine details are more visible and are less likely to be hidden by overlapping tissue
  • Improved detection of breast abnormalities by 27 to 50 percent
  • Decrease in false alarms due to abnormalities in the breast tissue
  • Reduction in additional testing
  • Fewer repeat images may be needed, reducing the exposure to radiation

Annual mammograms are an important part of a woman’s wellness routine, generally beginning at age 40. Call the Imaging Center on Lovers Lane today to schedule your 3D mammogram at 214.324.6220.

*You do not need a physician referral/order to schedule your annual screening mammogram. Although we accept all major insurance, please note that 3D mammography may not be covered by some insurance plans.

Some conditions may seem minor, but could be serious if not treated. Calling for emergency medical assistance provides rapid transportation to the hospital where care can be provided upon arrival. This is especially important with a heart attack.

Approximately 85 percent of heart muscle damage occurs within the first hour of a heart attack. This is often referred to as the “golden hour.” It is during this timeframe that the heart vessel needs to be opened. The faster the vessel is opened, the greater the benefit to the heart muscle. Of the more than one million Americans who have a heart attack each year, only about half of them survive, and many have permanent heart damage because they did not get help right away.

The best way to stop the heart attack process is to recognize symptoms early before damage occurs. If you believe you are having a medical emergency such as a heart attack, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1. Ultimately, it’s not the heart attack itself that kills. It’s also the time wasted when trying to decide whether or not to go to the hospital. In many areas, emergency medical services can diagnose a heart attack before arriving at the hospital and initiate early treatment.

Some things just seem to go together, like peanut butter and jelly, pencil and paper, and night and day. Other things don’t go hand in hand nearly as well, like oil and vinegar, cats and water, and a square peg and a round hole. Another pair that may not mix well is medications and sun.

Some medications, from common antibiotics to heart medicines, can increase sensitivity to the sun that may cause the skin to burn in less time and with less exposure to the sun than normal. This drug-induced sensitivity to the sun is called photosensitivity. There are two basic types of photosensitivity reactions: phototoxicity and photoallergy.

Phototoxic reactions usually appear within 24 hours of exposure and look like an exaggerated sunburn. Skin damage can range from mild redness to swelling and

blisters. This type of reaction is limited to areas exposed to the sun and usually disappears after the drug is discontinued. In a photoallergic reaction, an eczema-type rash may develop a few days after exposure that could spread to parts of the body that were not in the sun.

Examples of phototoxic drugs include certain antibiotics, antihistamines, malaria medications, cancer chemotherapy and cardiac drugs, diuretics, diabetic medicines, painkillers, skin and acne medications, and psychiatric drugs. Common photoallergic drugs include some sunscreens, anti-microbials, painkillers, cancer chemotherapy drugs and fragrances.

The most important step in treatment is discontinuing, if possible, use of the drug that is causing the photosensitivity. Usual sunburn prevention measures also may help, such as avoiding prolonged exposure to sunlight, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen. Topical steroid creams could be used to help alleviate redness and antihistamines can minimize itching.

It’s summertime so fire up your grills! Whether you’re a seasoned veteran of many cook-outs, or just learning how to barbecue, here are a few tips to help you keep your meals lean and healthy, so family members and friends will come back for more.

Don’t be afraid to marinate.

Marinating meats not only adds great flavor, but also can help reduce the formation of substances that could potentially increase the risk of cancer.

Smaller is better.

Portioning meat into smaller cubes or slices can speed up cooking time so they have less chance of charring.

Get the temperature right.

The ideal temperatures are 165 degrees for ground poultry, 160 degrees for ground red meats and fresh pork, and 145 degrees for red meat like steaks or chops.

Turn down the heat.

Keep the heat down with a low flame to reduce the chances of burning or charring.

Take it off.

Remove any visible fat on meat to reduce flare-ups. Another potential cancer-causing substance comes from smoke that forms when fat drips from meat onto the grill.

Don’t always think meat.

Vegetables are great grilled, especially onions, corn on the cob, eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and asparagus, as well as apples, pears, peaches and bananas.

Save time and pre-cook.

Reduce the amount of time on the grill by partially cooking meat in the microwave. Be sure to put the partially cooked meat straight onto the grill to finish cooking.

Keep it clean.

Scrub the grill with a brush before and after grilling.

It’s not just what you grill, but how you grill it that can help make foods healthy, flavorful and safe.
