The ice that hit Dallas melted just in time for Dallas CASA Young Professionals’ CASAblanca party to get hot.

The event was a fundraiser for the children served by Dallas CASA, who have experienced abuse or neglect and been placed in the protective care of the state. Dallas CASA’s trained volunteers advocate for these children in court.

The Roaring ‘20s-themed event was chaired by Mindy Busch, Elena Littleton and Sonya Reddy. Elena and her husband Zach are sworn advocates for Dallas CASA.

“For me, the event is such a great way to share about the wonderful things CASA does with young professionals who might not have heard about CASA,” said Littleton, who is VP of sales for Ad Pages. “There’s so many more ways to get involved than being an advocate, and people love hearing about the good things CASA is doing in the community.”

Dallas CASA Board members in attendance included Jonathan Bassham, Greg May, Nicki Stafford, Megan Sterquell and Linda Swartz. The Young Professionals is an auxiliary group of Dallas CASA which seeks to support the mission of Dallas CASA.

The Special Edition Band provided entertainment for the evening. Honey walnut shrimp, spicy chili chicken, Vietnamese spring rolls, parmesan mini meatballs, mini Caprese skewers and a fried rice station. The evening ended with a take-home honey butter chicken biscuit.

Special fundraisers for the evening included a champagne bar selling glasses of Vueve Clicquot and a silent auction featuring a lake house weekend, original art, beauty and fitness donations, a gift certificate with Ride Alto, restaurant gift cards, golf outings and many others items geared toward the under-40 crowd.

Presenting sponsor for the event was The Parvin Group.

Royal Flush sponsors were Christine and Jonathan Bassham and CultureMap. Straight Flush sponsors were Accelerate, Ad Pages Solutions, Sidley Austin, Elite Casino Events, Quilling, Delander, Lownds, Winslett & Moser, P.C., R&B Roofing and Newton Thomas. Full House sponsors included Debby and Hugh Comer, The Dimension Group, Ashley and John Forbes, Hannah and Greg May, Milbern Ray & Company, Retta A. Miller, Linda and Rob Swartz and Whiskey Pearl.

Other sponsors included Lone Star Cadillac, Megan and Tom Sterquell, Mai Plumbing Company and Vitalife Wellness.

Dallas CASA will honor WFAA anchor Cynthia Izaguirre with the 2022 Caroline Rose Hunt Cherish the Children Award at the agency’s spring luncheon.

The host of Wednesday’s Child, Izaguirre has long used her public platform to advocate for children in foster care. Wednesday’s Child features stories of children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are looking for permanent, loving homes. Izaguirre has hosted the 40-year-old program since 2011.

The Cherish the Children Luncheon will be Friday, May 6 at The Omni Dallas Hotel. It is hosted by Dallas CASA Children’s Council and co-chaired by Beth Cholerton and Hannah May. All funds raised at the event go to support recruiting, training and supervising community volunteers to serve as advocates for children in the protective care of the state.

The Cherish the Children award is named for Mrs. Hunt, a longtime supporter of Dallas CASA and children in need and beloved Dallasite. The award recognizes an individual or organization for outstanding contributions helping children who have been removed from home due to abuse or neglect. The award was inspired by its namesake Mrs. Hunt because of her constant dedication to the most vulnerable in our city. During the luncheon, Izaguirre will be interviewed by Luncheon Program Host and Dallas CASA Board Chair Cynt Marshall, CEO of the Dallas Mavericks.

For Izaguirre, hosting Wednesday’s Child has been a gift. She recalls interviewing one a young boy who became overwhelmed during taping. She stopped filming immediately and committed herself to doing as many tapings as it took for him to find an adoptive home. Today, he has been adopted and is a teenager – “driving, working and flourishing,” according to Izaguirre.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned from Wednesday’s Child is that I need these children as much as they need me,” she said. “Every child I meet inspires me to be a better human being.”

Dallas CASA’s volunteers are community members who are appointed by judges to advocate for child victims of abuse or neglect navigating a complicated child welfare system. Dallas CASA’s volunteers advocate for educational, therapeutic and medical needs and work closely with Child Protective Services, families and attorneys to help the children have safe and permanent homes. They are often the only consistent, caring adult by a child’s side during a frightening and uncertain time.

“I want Dallas CASA volunteers to know they’re angels!” Izaguirre said. “The kids just want people to know they are normal. They want families who will love them through the good and the ugly.”

About Dallas CASA

Dallas CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) trains and supervises community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children who have been removed from unsafe homes. Supported by professional staff, volunteers gather information and make recommendations to help judges decide the services each child needs to heal from trauma and the best outcome for a safe and permanent home. For many foster children, a CASA volunteer is the only consistent, caring adult during a frightening, uncertain time.  Now in its 41st year, Dallas CASA serves more children than any of the more than 900 CASA programs nationwide.  In 2020, 1,527 Dallas CASA volunteers were assigned to advocate for 3,374 children in protective care. CASA depends on the generosity and the commitment of the community to make sure every child in need has a CASA volunteer advocate. To learn more, visit dallascasa.org.

Please join the Dallas CASA Children’s Council and event co-chairs, Jenny Reynolds and Lindsay Stengle, for Cherish the Children on May 14. Dallas CASA will present the 2021 Caroline Rose Hunt Cherish the Children Award to this year’s honoree, the North Texas Cares Funders Collaborative.

In the spring of 2020, when shelter-in-place restrictions and fears of the pandemic quashed major fundraising events and drastically reduced the area’s volunteer troops in Dallas, a collaboration of more than 45 foundations, corporations and individual funders came together to provide support for non-profit organizations that work with people and communities most affected by all aspects of COVID-19.

The guest speaker for Cherish the Children is Father Gregory Boyle, an American Roman Catholic priest of the Jesuit order and founder and Director of Homeboy Industries, the world’s largest gang-intervention and rehabilitation program. Julie Fine, Emmy award winning journalist and NBC5 reporter, will lead a discussion with Father Boyle.

The Caroline Rose Hunt Cherish the Children Award recognizes an individual or organization for outstanding contributions to helping children, particularly those who have been victims of abuse or neglect.

To purchase tickets, please visit DallasCASA.org/CherishtheChildren.

Thank you for your generosity, continued support and for recognizing that child victims in our community need us now more than ever.

Downtown Dallas Will Go True Blue Friday Night To Promote Child Abuse Prevention Month

Dallas CASA with its volunteer advocates has always been on the forefront of protecting abused children. So April is especially important to the organization since it is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.

It’s a very unfortunate fact that “on any given day, more than 2,000 Dallas County children live in the protective care of the state due to abuse and severe neglect.” Just this past year during the pandemic, “1,527 Dallas CASA volunteer advocates were assigned to advocate for 3,374 children in protective care.”

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS MONTH*

To show its appreciation for Child Protective Services caseworkers, Dallas CASA will host a drive-thru from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for The Dallas County Child Abuse Prevention Coalition’s Dallas County Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Event on Friday with refreshments from In-N-Out Burger.

They’ve even arranged for a special thank-you video featuring Dallas CASA President and CEO Kathleen LaValleHadijat Collins from FCAA Foundation, Irish Burch from Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, Sophie Phillips from TexProtects and Ona Foster from Family Compass for the caseworkers.

That night, downtown Dallas will share in the awareness spreading as the major buildings will dazzle in neon blue.

If you want to show your appreciation, wear blue Friday to show your support.
