One streak may have come to an end during Tuesday's district match against Prestonwood Christian, but the streaks that matter most are still as solid as ever.

PCA stole the opening set from a banged up Bishop Lynch squad, putting an end to a streak of 37 straight set wins, but the top-ranked Lady Friars rallied behind solid play the rest of the night to beat the Lions 3-1 with scores of 20-25, 25-8, 25-23 and 25-16.

Bishop Lynch kept alive two bigger streaks, increasing their overall win streak to 15 and their string of consecutive district matches won to a whopping 44.

With Melanie Heigele (team-leader in assists) and Madi Tyus (team-leader in kills) nursing injuries and two others playing at less than 100 percent, sophomore Hannah Osborn stepped up with a solid performance that included 17 assists and six digs.

Junior Elizabeth Moreland shined for the second straight outing with 10 digs and seven kills, while Hannah Puddy led the attack with a team-high 12 kills.

Audrey May led the team with 20 assists, Morgan Hinds had a game-high 21 digs and Lauryn Green notched eight kills.

The Lady Friars improved to 25-7 overall and remained unbeaten in league play at 12-0.

Bishop Lynch will play three of its final four regular season matches away from home, including Thursday's meeting with Ursuline Academy at 6 p.m.

The Lady Friars' final home game will be Tuesday against Bishop Dunne, followed by consecutive road games against Trinity Christian (10/20) and Liberty Christian (10/25).

The junior varsity squad also improved to 12-0 in district play and moved to 22-7 overall with a 2-1 win over Prestonwood with scores of 25-20, 21-25 and 15-9.

Lucy Maher (17 digs), Lucy McGarry (16 assists), Isabella Springman (9 kills) and Chidera Osuagwu (3 blocks) led the team against PCA.

The Bishop Lynch AquaFriars closed out their home schedule Thursday night against Woodrow Wilson High School. 

It was Senior Night for Jesseca Hageman, Bonnie Nolan, Niamh Tierney, Eric Bray, Will Eckles, Sean O'Hare and Will Seidel.

It was a good night for both the men and ladies teams. The Friar men scored a victory in the meet, defeating Wilson by a score of 99- 62. The men were again led by Eckles, who won the 100-yard butterfly in a personal best time of 1:01.05 seconds, and also won the 200-yard freestyle.  

The Friar fortunes also got a boost from junior George Smith, who won both the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard backstroke, both in personal best times.

Other good showings were by:

• Sean O'Hare, who won the 100-yard freestyle;
• Eric Bray, who won the 500-yard freestyle and finished second in the 200-yard freestyle; and
• Joe Weber, who won the 50-yard freestyle.

O'Hare, Eckles, and Weber joined with Killian Baker to lead a sweep of the 200-yard freestyle relay, while O'Hare, Bray and Eckles combined with Shaughnessey Smith to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Lady Friars ran their record to a perfect 3-0 on the season, defeating Wilson 91-77. The Lady Friars were led by Lindsay Hudspeth, who won the 200-yard individual medley and led a sweep of the 100-yard butterfly. 

Other fine performances were given by:

• Niamh Tierney, who won the 50-yard freestyle and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly;
• Bonnie Nolan, who won the 200-yard freestyle in a personal best time of 2:10.49 seconds, and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke;
• Ailish Tierney, who won the 100-yard freestyle; and
• Annie Zajicek and Elli Jordan, who finished 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Niamh Tierney, Nolan and Jesseca Hageman teamed with Ailish Tierney to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, and Hudspeth joined Niamh Tierney, Hageman and Nolan to win the 400-yard freestyle relay.  

The Friars' next meet will be October 22 at 1 p.m. versus JP II and Nolan Catholic at the Knights of Columbus pool.

Bishop Lynch knew just where to attack Trinity Christian when the two teams met Friday night, and the plan paid huge dividends as the Friars emerged with a 49-42 win over the Trojans at Roffino Stadium.

The Friars (3-2, 1-1) took advantage of a porous TCA rushing defense that entered the game surrendering just over 300 yards per game on the ground. Bishop Lynch blew that number away, churning out 535 of its season-best 582 total yards via the running game.

Jaire Moore (209), Jarek Broussard (167) and Jermaine Mask (153) each eclipsed the 150-yard mark. Moore found the end zone four times while the others each scored once.

Moore's touchdown runs covered 63, 64, 23 and 2 yards. Mask sprinted 75 yards to paydirt and Broussard opened the scoring with a 79-yard scamper, while also putting the game away for good with a 74-yard run down to the TCA 5 with less than a minute to play.

The Friars led by as many as 21 points on two separate occasions, taking a 28-7 lead late in the first half, then entering the final frame with a 49-28 advantage.

TCA quarterback Court Walker came into the contest averaging 400 yards and six touchdowns per game through the air and almost met those numbers against the Friars. The senior transfer passed for 379 yards but needed 32 completions and 57 attempts to do so. He threw four TD passes and scored twice on the ground.

For the fourth straight week, the Friars' opportunistic defense won the turnover battle, forcing two fumbles while the offense played turnover-free for the third time in the past four games.

Keion McGee recovered both TCA fumbles, the second of which came with under two minutes to play and the Trojans at the Bishop Lynch 15-yard line.

The BL defense will get another stiff test next week when the Friars head to Plano to take on the defending TAPPS state champions from Prestonwood Christian (4-1, 2-0).

Like TCA, the Lions score at an alarming rate (49.2 points per game) but also allow more than 42 points each outing.

On Thursday, September 22^nd, forty-four Bishop Lynch High School students were inducted into their respective World Language Honor Societies – Delta Epsilon Phi for German, La Société Honoraire de Français for French and La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica for Spanish.

Membership into the honor societies is not easy. Grades, recommendations and essays are just some of the components of the applications. One of last year’s inductees Ryan Malin said, “For me, being in the honor society is a sign of my dedication to the German language and my ability to persevere in it.” Brianna Vergel agreed, adding, “It means a lot to me to be in the Spanish Honor Society.” While membership in an honor society shows excellence in academics, there is much more to it than that. “Don’t be closed-off into thinking that this is only for college credits. Immerse yourself in the culture and try to teach others about the culture and language. That’s the most important part,” stated Grace Mena, a member of the Spanish Honor Society.  

Ms. Gabriella Briones, a 2010 alumna of Bishop Lynch, spoke to the crowd about the importance of learning a language and exploring the world and culture of languages. She stated, “Whatever the reason [for learning a language] might be, you’ve followed your enthusiasm this far and I encourage you to continue this pursuit. Learning a foreign language, in a country that does not place a high value on language acquisition, is huge. It will help you tremendously in college and in your professional careers.”

Mathew Young, German Club Secretary and new inductee, commented, “I thought [Ms. Briones’] speech was very inspiring. She showed me how hard work throughout life can really pay off. She inspired me to continue to learn German and possibly pick up another language.” German student Helena Lykke said, “I was shocked at how she was able to learn more than one language and apply it to her current job today.” 

Briones concluded her speech with the following remarks, “The attacks that had happened in Paris and Brussels are still very fresh. I had to make peace with the idea that it was a very real possibility for something like that to happen in Berlin. But the adventures, the understanding, and the cross-cultural experiences, friendships and opportunities are too good to pass up. Study the grammar, make the flash cards, watch a movie with subtitles, write a pen pal, Skype a foreign friend, do everything you can now because you never know how far you’ll go in this world.”

Ms. Mena reacted to Briones’ words of wisdom, stating, “I like that she talked about all of the different places she traveled to and how she was immersed in so many different cultures.  I also like when she talked about how even if a bombing in Berlin was possible all of the opportunities she had overlooked that. It was worth it.” Second year Delta Epsilon Phi member Ryan Malin commented, “I really appreciated Gabriella's speech. It reminded me of the importance of language and of continuing to study a language. She also provided me some insight on what it is like to study abroad, as well as the benefits that it provides.”

After being inducted, Matthew Young said, “Being in GNHS really inspires me to try to do my very best ... It inspires me to continue to take German and be the very best person I can be.”The honor societies are more than just good grades and G.P.A.’s. “It means [a lot] to me that if I work hard, it really pays off. I’m excited to be challenged and to take bigger steps in learning another language,” exclaimed new French Honor Society inductee Chelsea O'Donnell. “I can’t wait to have so much more fun these next two years!” Fellow junior and new German Honor Society member Lykke added, “To be in the society means to be a part of something bigger than myself, to give myself leeway to explore German culture, and to motivate myself to do better academically in pursuit of German knowledge.”

The Bishop Lynch AquaFriars hosted Jesuit, Ursuline, John Paul II, and Nolan in the Knights of Columbus Invitational on Saturday. 

The Lady Friars won the meet, scoring 85 points to 78 for Ursuline, 39 for JP2 and 33 for Nolan.
