Sean and Catherine

Dallas resident Sean Lowe was “the bachelor” on the 17th season of the popular ABC TV series “The Bachelor.”

Prior to that, Lowe had been a finalist on the feminine counterpart of the show, “The Bachelorette,” when he was one of three men left holding a rose from “bachelorette” Emily Maynard.

He has been voted America’s favorite bachelor, and the New York Times credits him with reinvigorating the show’s popularity.

One of the TV series’ main criticisms has been that the romances seldom “take,” but rather end along with the television set’s lights and cameras.

Not so with Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici. On the final episode, Giudici accepted Lowe’s rose and his engagement ring, and on January 26 of this year, the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

I asked Lowe what made their experience different from the others.

“With about two weeks left in the show, Catherine was always on my mind and I started to realize that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” Lowe said.

With that realization came commitment.

“We have committed ourselves to working on our relationship every day. It is not always easy, but we have vowed to love each other,” he added. “Catherine and I are best friends. There is no one I would rather spend time with than my wife,” Lowe said.

How and where they spend that time is often in our Lakewood/East Dallas neighborhood.

Pretty weather may find the couple hiking DallasKatyTrail. During not-so-pretty weather, “we may be snuggled together on the coach watching movies,” Lowe said.

The Lowes also enjoy casual dining at the Henderson Avenue restaurant “The Porch.”

Before settling in to life in Dallas as a married couple, Sean and Catherine had the chance to visit several exotic destinations while filming “The Bachelor.”  Lowe’s favorite was Thailand.

“Great people, beautiful beaches and gorgeous sunsets,” made the Southeast Asian country Lowe’s first choice.

Running around Dallas and traveling about the world sounds like a great life for the young couple, but what about the future and a family?

“We will definitely have kids one day,” Lowe said.

Right now Lola, their boxer, and Ellie, their chocolate lab, are their family.

“They may have the best lives two dogs can have,” Lowe said. “Their days consist of eating, napping, going to the park, (and the KatyTrail) and being loved by their parents.”

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I asked if he and Catherine had special plans.

“No plans, yet,” Lowe said. “We have been concentrating on our one year anniversary and have not made plans for Valentine’s Day.”

The Lowes recently returned from a book tour promoting Sean’s book “For the Right Reasons.”

In his book, Lowe talks about the backstage drama of the television show “The Bachelor,” his Christian faith and why “nice guys finish first.”
