Palm Sunday buffet

Following Sunday’s morning worship service on Palm Sunday, the congregation and guests of Central Christian Church gathered in the church fellowship hall to enjoy a traditional spring-time luncheon of baked ham, potatoes au gratin and steamed asparagus prepared by Mary Ann Duckworth.   The Disciples Women had the opportunity to “show-case” their baking skills with cakes, pies and cookies at a smorgasbord of spring-time favorite desserts.  Choices included a Pineapple upside down cake, Key Lime pie, Carol Archer’s famous vanilla pound cake, Holly Puig’s chocolate cake with hand-formed roses and Shelia Huffman’s Color Vision Lemon Jell-o Cake.

The traditional Palm Sunday service and lunch is celebrated each year at Central marking the beginning of Holy Week.  Highlights of the morning service included flutist Tara Richter, the performance of “The Holy City” by operatic soprano, Marsha Anderson, and the procession of palms.

Thursday evening, Maundy Thursday, the chancel choir will perform the cantata, “Amazing Love” at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.  Guest artists will include Brad Hodges on the clarinet and Walter Scott Idol on the cello.

Easter morning, Central will participate in a Sunrise Communion at T. P. Hill on the western shore of White Rock Lake at 7 a.m.

Back at Central there will be an Easter service in the community dog park at 9 a.m.

Brunch of bagels, croissants, scones, Strawberries Romanoff, deviled eggs and Gus’s famous cappuccino will be served in fellowship hall at 9:45.

Trumpets will sound at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary as we celebrate the most holy of Christian holidays.

All are welcome.  There is plenty of seating and plenty of parking available.  Please join us at Central.

Color-Vision Cake from Betty Crocker

(This vintage cake always looks pretty on a spring-time buffet.)

1 white cake mix or French Vanilla

(Eggs, oil and water as called for in the cake mix directions)

3 Tbs. of your favorite flavored jell-o powder (lemon for lemon cake) from a small box (save remaining for frosting if you wish)

1 Betty Crocker Home Style Fluffy White Frosting Mix (can be purchased at Walmart on-line)

Prepare cake mix according to package directions with the addition of the dry gelatin before mixing.

Bake according to package directions.

Prepare frosting according to package directions.  You may color and flavor it with remaining jell-o, food coloring, or leave it white. (I used yellow food coloring for the Lemon cake.) The fluffy frosting allows you to create beautiful swirls on the cake.

Frost the cake and voila—a glamorous vintage Colorvision cake reminiscent of the 1950’s.
