Kathy Harris, Mary Kay Henley and Debbie Simurda
The Book Trotters, a Lakewood book club, met at Times Ten Cellar Monday evening to discuss Pat Conroy’s “My Reading Life.”
We all know and love Conroy’s bestselling novels, many set in the south such as “The Prince of Tides.” In this book Conroy discussed the reading list that shaped his writing.
Kathy Harris led the discussion with several study questions such as how Conroy’s love for Margaret Mitchell’s classic, “Gone with the Wind” influenced his writing.
It was announced this morning on Good Morning America that election night is number one for pizza delivery in America, but the Book Trotters got a head start and enjoyed pizza and Caesar salad from Scalini’s last night along with their favorite Times Ten wines.
Kathy Harris served a “melted ice cream” cake and Mary Kay Henley gave everyone a personal pie to introduce the January 2017 read, “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Alan Bradley.
Another year is coming to an end and next month the book club will enjoy a social evening at Mi Cocina in Lakewood.
The group always selects a charity for the Christmas season and this year they will collect small stuffed toys for the Dallas Police Department.
Giving a stuffed toy to a small child at the scene of an accident or emergency call can be calming to the child. Officers carry the toys in their car for that purpose.
The Book Trotters will collect them and donate them to the department. If you are in the Lakewood neighborhood and would like to donate, Kathy Harris is accepting them on the porch of her Vickery Place bungalow, 5545 Willis Avenue.
New and slightly used, small stuffed toys are great for this purpose.
Happy Thanksgiving from the Book Trotters.
