Financial Blues: Lakewood's The Balcony Club Could Close on Sept. 14th

Lakewood’s The Balcony Club has got the blues. And it’s more than just that soulful jazzy music that echoes off the club’s walls each day.  It’s the real deal. The club, open since 1988, needs financial help or its doors will be locked by the landlord on September 14th.

According to a press release, the owner, Tommy Stanco has struggled with financial problems over the past few years due to several reasons. After the club was disconnected from the Lakewood Theater’s fire alarm system in June of 2009, “theater management required eight days to effect repairs, during which time the club was forced to have a fire marshal on site at all times, at a cost of $70 per hour-a drain on the company’s finances.” The fire alarm problems coupled with the national financial downturn have left Stanco searching for solutions to save the club.

Stanco is looking for either an investor willing to put about $20,000 into the club in exchange for partial ownership, or a buyer to purchase the club outright. His only caveat is that the buyer “must be committed to maintaining the club’s identity and its relationship with employees and house musicians.”

The Balcony Club books at least two live music acts each day and does not charge a cover. Bands are composed of some of Dallas’ finest musicians who adore playing at the club for “the opportunity it provides them to perform.” One of the most noteworthy musicians was “Big Al” Dupree.  A pianist, vocalist, and saxophonist, Dupree performed at The Balcony Club five nights a week from 1994 until his death in 2003. His first album, “Big Al Swings the Blues” was recognized internationally.

While in need of financial help now, there is confidence about the club’s long-term future. Stanco said sales are up in recent months and the upcoming entry of Mi Cocina Restaurant into a nearby space is promising.

The club is holding a “rally week” from September 5th to the 11th in an attempt to keep its doors open. On Saturday September 10th, the “Benefit to Save The Balcony Club” will go from 2 p.m. to close. There will be a pot luck barbecue from 3 to 6 p.m. and performers all afternoon and evening.

Potential investors and buyers should contact Mr. Stanco at 214-320-0884.

The Balcony Club is located at 1825 Abrams Road, above the Lakewood Theater.
