On Saturday, Jan. 12, profits from the sales of the 2012 Vickery Place cookbook, Recipes and Recollections: Vickery Place Cooking since 1911, were presented to two Senior Pet Assistance Network (SPAN) representatives - President Laurie Jennings and Jann Horswell.

SPAN was founded by Lake Highlands resident, Adelle Taylor, in an effort to help low-income elderly residents with their beloved pets by providing them pet food and basic veterinary care when needed.

Vickery Place residents, Kathy Harris and Shelia Huffman, co-edited a commemorative cookbook in 2011 to celebrate their historic East Dallas neighborhood’s 100th birthday. The cookbook is filled with recipes from past and current residents of Vickery Place and neighboring Lower Greenville and Henderson Avenue restaurants. It contains photographs dating back to the 1920s, cooking and entertaining quips from the Dallas Morning News archives and a foreword by local historian and storyteller, Rose Mary Rumbley.

Believing in SPAN’s worthwhile cause, Kathy and Shelia chose it to benefit from the cookbook sales. Shelia’s Boston Terrier, Wheels, was the 2012 "spokesdog" for the cookbook, endorsing the East Dallas organization that cares for both seniors and animals.

Jimmy’s Food Store, owned by the DiCarlo family, has been a local retail source for the book and a strong force in its success. The first printing sold out in 2011, and the book was reprinted in 2012. There are a limited number of copies still available for purchase at Jimmy’s, located at 4901 Bryan Street.
