Texans Can Academies Organization of the Year Awar

Texans Can Academies won the Organization of the Year $10M+ award at D CEO’s 2019 Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards last night. The awards are presented in partnership with Communities Foundation of Texas. Texans Can Academies was one of over 400 organizations in the Dallas / Fort Worth area to apply for the 2019 Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards. Finalists for the award were three other outstanding North Texas nonprofit groups: ChildCareGroup, SPCA Texas and Teach for America.

The 2019 Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Awards honor nonprofit professionals and organizations that continue to make a positive impact on the community. The efforts of the corporations that support the local organizations are also recognized, such as executives lending their leadership expertise or providing support through financial donations.

The awards ceremony was held  Thursday, August 1st at the Frontiers of Flight Museum.  Christine Perez, editor of D CEO, Monica Egert Smith, chief relationship officer of Communities Foundation of Texas and Will Maddox associate editor of D CEO presented the awards to the audience of more than 600.  Richard Marquez, CEO of Texans Can Academies, accepted the award on behalf of the teachers, staff, students and parents of their schools. He emphasized the need for schools to focus on the whole child - not just rigorous academics in the classroom but what their social and wellness needs are outside the classroom as well.

Texans Can Academies is a non-profit school system serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. The system includes 14 dropout prevention and recovery schools located in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice and offer students, aged 14 to 21, a second chance at earning their high school diploma instead of a General Education Development (GED). Texans Can Academies strives to provide the highest quality education to all students, along with health and wellness services to prepare them with the skills needed to succeed after graduation.
