Lakehill Art Students Take Top Honors at District, Four Artists Advance to State

On February 28, Visual Arts Chair Scott Boles took 53 works of art created by Lakehill Upper School art students to compete in the TAPPS 2A District 2 Art competition. The competition, held at the Covenant School in Richardson, showcased 366 works of art from nine schools from around North Texas.

In the most important category of Senior Portfolio, with ten entries, Lauren Davenport took first place, earning the title of District Champion. Laura Currey took third, and Dory Fine received honorable mention. In this category, seniors from the competing schools bring six of their best works of art. Lauren entered her paintings and drawings of various subjects, Laura entered portrait drawings of her horses, and Dory entered her surreal oil pastels.
 
Lakehill artists entered six categories, including Drawing Black and White, Drawing Color, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Senior Portfolio.
 
In the category of Drawing Black and White, Laura Currey received fourth place and sixth place for her graphite drawings of horses.
 
Stephanie Flores received an Honorable Mention in Drawing Black and White for her graphite surreal still life.
In the category of Drawing Color, Dory Fine placed fourth with her oil pastel self-portrait from mirror. Lauren Davenport received an honorable mention for her oil pastel parrot.
In Painting, Lauren Davenport took fifth with her acrylic My How Time Butterflies, and Gabriella Gonzalez took sixth place with an acrylic self-portrait. Camryn Thompson took fourth place in Photography and Dory Fine placed second in Sculpture.
The Senior Portfolios of Davenport and Currey will now advance to Austin to compete on the state level, as will the works of Thompson and Fine. The TAPPS State Art competition will be held March 22-23 at Concordia University in Austin.
