The year is 1956 and the New York Yankees dominate Major League Baseball.

In Washington, DC, Meg Boyd and other "baseball widows" around the nation's capital lament about losing their husbands to baseball for six months every year, as they cheer on their beloved Washington Senators.

Disheartened by another loss for the Senators, Meg's husband Joe sells his soul to the devil, Mr. Applegate, for "one good long ball hitter" for his team. Mr. Applegate grants his wish, turning him into a 22-year-old Joe Hardy, the greatest ballplayer in history.

Will Joe use his escape clause and return to his wife before the final game...or will he play, thus sealing his fate?
