Lakehill Soccer Teams End Seasons on a High Note

Middle School Soccer
Lakehill's Middle School eighth grade soccer team beat Parish at home on February 5, 6-0. This game was scoreless through the first half. Jeremiah Blanco made several fantastic plays in goal to deny breakaways from Parish. Blanco continued to deny Parish on breakaways throughout the second half. Lakehill began scoring halfway through the second half, accruing six goals in the span of 10 minutes.

James McKinney opened the scoring on a penalty kick after being tugged from behind. He also closed out the scoring with a roof shot from just inside the 18-yard box over the goalie, his third of the game. Max Byrd had two goals, and Kayla Ristianto scored one. Bella Pumpelly and Kellen Kahn each had assists. This was the final Middle School game of an exciting season.

Varsity Soccer
Lakehill's Varsity Soccer team defeated Lutheran at home on February 1, on penalty kicks. Ben Gillman, Greg Gillman, Justin Reed, and John Hirata were honored before the game in the Senior Night presentation. Logan Stout opened the scoring seven minutes into the game and Lutheran responded to level the game soon after on a breakaway. Ben Gillman scored on a pass from Cade Armstrong, but Lutheran tied the game on a breakaway, making it 2-2 at the half. It remained a tight battle in the second half, until Henry Hopkins earned a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Hopkins sent a low, stinging shot around the wall of players and into the right side of goal to give Lakehill the lead, 3-2. Minutes before the end of regular time, Lutheran retied the game. The game went to penalty kicks where Hopkins and Leake were able to score, and Spencer Neill was able to keep Lutheran from scoring on all but one of their penalty kicks, giving Lakehill the win.

The team scored another victory on February 4, defeating Tyler All Saints, 2-1. This game was tight throughout the first half. Neill came out of the goal to prevent or pressure All Saints strikers on chance after chance. It was scoreless through the first half. Stout opened the scoring on a pass from Charlie Leake. All Saints scored on a breakaway 10 minutes later on a perfectly placed shot that bent just inside the post. With three minutes left, a hobbled Varnes was able to work the ball through the right side of the All Saints defense and sent a ball through to Stout at the back post who scored the game winner to close out the season on a high note.
