Lakehill Middle School Students Enjoy Old-Fashioned Fun

Lakehill Preparatory School's 21st annual Mark Twain Day celebrated the culmination of the fifth grade unit of study on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

The event offered fourth and fifth grade students the chance to have fun the old-fashioned way: sack races, bobbing for apples, and fence painting. Students also competed in a variety of good-natured contests, including sunflower seed spitting, pie eating, and bragging.

The fifth grade students said they loved making the miniature rafts, dressing up as the characters, and playing games that kids played more than a hundred years ago.

Students honored for the most authentic costumes included Madeline Jones (Becky Thatcher), Ian Johnston (Tom Sawyer), and Clio Byrd (Huck Finn). Honorable Mention went to Grafton Robinson.

Jason Dickerson took the top prize for the jury-evaluated rafts, with Max Crist taking second. Grace Horne and Maya Patel took third, and Cece Degeyter and Jax Henegar claimed honorable mention.

Lakehill dad Ross Crum played the role of Mark Twain, conducting the bragging contest. Fourth graders enjoyed dressing up like Tom Sawyer's heroes - circus performers, pirates, and outlaws.

Karin Matz and Susan Widhalm organized a great team of parent volunteers who made the event go smoothly.
