The summer camp rounding out the Gourmet Guys and Girls Cooking Class series, taught by Susan Hamm, was themed "Cupcake Crazy."

The class met at Whole Foods Lakewood Thursday morning, August 1 for a hands-on workshop in the bakery. Assisted by Whole Foods employee, Nicole Pryke, the class was provided unlimited cupcakes, giant decorator bags filled with colored frosting and sprinkles galore to create their signature confections.

The icing on the cake, Whole Foods, a pioneer of natural organic foods, uses only pure cane sugar in their cakes and frostings, and the food coloring is made of fruits and vegetables. For instance, the color red is made from beet extract and the color orange a combination of red cabbage, carrot, beet extract and turmeric.

Hamm began the summer cooking camp in her M-Streets home to be able to spend creative time with her own child, while sharing her interest in cooking and crafts with other children. It was a great idea, as Gourmet Guys and Girls is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Cooking camps this season included themes like “Let the Cookie Crumble," “Food on a Stick” and this week’s “Cupcake Crazy.”

When asked what they had learned about cooking this week, Hanna Bigalow replied, “you need math to cook.” Seth Bigalow shared that you don’t need a whole lot of sugar to make food taste good. Former student Allison Riemer returned to camp this week as Hamm’s teenage assistant. She recalled learning which foods complement each other during her time in the cooking camps.

When it comes to cooking, those are all good lessons to know!
