Stonewall Jackson Elementary School lowered the flag Tuesday afternoon, June 11, for the final time this school year. The year-end flag ceremony on the front lawn of the school, located on Mockingbird Lane, also marked the end of renowned principal Olivia Henderson’s 22-year tenure running the highly-praised East Dallas school.

Stonewall Jackson, locally known as Stonewall, is the regional school for the deaf and teaches American Sign Language as part of its curriculum to all students attending the school. Over the years, it has held the academic status of "exemplary," been named a Blue Ribbon School and was once rated by Redbook Magazine as one of the top schools in the nation. It was also one of the first schools in Dallas to create an outdoor learning center with the installation of the well-known Stonewall Garden and more recently, the addition of a schoolyard chicken coup.

The Star choir performed at the ceremony, and student council members and selected students from the fifth grade spoke their praise for the school and for Principal Henderson.
