Muster Your Troops and Head to Dallas Heritage Village for Civil War on the Home Front on Nov. 16

Come enlist for the day 19th century style at Dallas Heritage Village on November 16 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. for the annual Civil War on the Home Front. At 2 p.m. the Confederate and Union Troops will stage a battle re-enactment on the museum grounds. (Troops use black powder weapons with no bullets.) For Cub and Boy Scouts, this event also provides a fun opportunity to meet several badge requirements.

Explore camp life during the Civil War, participate in a drill with the soldiers, learn about a new sport the men are calling baseball, and pitch some horseshoes at the Millermore home. Come see how soldiers filled the hours between battles. Join in a game of dominoes or a round of cards to help take your mind off the battle ahead. Sit around the campfire for some tall tales and music. Soldiers couldn't carry a fiddle into battle but there was always space in a pocket for a mouth organ. Join us for Civil War on the Home Front as we prepare for battle at the village and learn more about the life of a soldier.

Throughout the day, visitors may explore our historic buildings, participate in hands-on activities and see civilian life demonstrations in the 1860s Living Farmstead and Miller complex. From cooking and spinning to visiting with historic interpreters, guests will see what life was like for those living in Civil War times.

“This is a very unique and busy day at Dallas Heritage Village, recreating history,” said Melissa Prycer, Interim Executive Director. “We are excited to give our visitors a glimpse into the personal lives of the soldiers, showing how they spent their days when they were not fighting. It is going to be a fun day, which will also help scouts meet a lot of badge requirements.”

Advance Tickets are $5 for scouts and adults and must be purchased by Nov. 13. Children 3 and under are free. Scout Patches are $3. At the gate, $9 Adults, $7 Seniors (65+), $5 Kids (ages 4-12). Tickets are available for online purchase at dallasheritagevillage.org or you may call 214-413-3674. Make your reservation now to reserve your scout patches, which will also be available for day of purchase, but in limited quantities.

Dallas Heritage Village, located at Old City Park, is a nationally accredited history museum, depicting life in Dallas from 1840-1910. It is one of only five museums in the Dallas area to have this distinction. The grounds showcase 38 historic structures, including log cabins, the pre-Civil War Millermore home, a Victorian Main Street, a railroad complex, an 1860s farmstead with livestock, a 19th century church, school and more. Visitors discover how crops were grown, animals cared for and how family living progressed from log cabins to grand manors and Victorian homes. Dallas Heritage Village is supported, in part, by the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and the Texas Commission on the Arts as well as individual and group donations. Dallas Heritage Village was nominated in 2011 and 2012 by D Magazine as one of the top Dallas-area family attractions. It is located at 1515 South Harwood, one block south of Farmers Market in Downtown Dallas. Hours of operation are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday, noon – 4 p.m. The Village is closed the months of January and August.
