For the second year in a row, the Woodrow Wilson Wildcat swim team is sending swimmers to the UIL Swimming & Diving State Meet. At the Region 4-5A Swimming and Diving Championships on February 5-6, 1st place girls 200 freestyle relay team, 1st place 100 freestyle swimmer Francesca Tissino, and 2nd place diver Anna Scherger all qualified to compete at the state meet which will be held at the Texas Swim Center in Austin on February 19-20. Scherger becomes the first diver from Woodrow to qualify for state. The relay team consists of co-captains, Lawson Freeman and Caroline North, Noelle Martinez and Tissino. These swimmers also make up the 400 freestyle relay team which placed 2nd at regionals.

The Wildcats continued their successful season with the girls swim team coming in 2nd overall in the region. Tissino finished 3rd in the 200 free, North placed 3rd in backstroke and 4th in the 200 IM, Freeman placed 2nd in the 50 free and 5th in the 100 free, Abigail Giles was 5th in the 50 free, ClaireGustafson finished 6th in the 500 free, and the 200 medley relay team, made up Gustafson, Macie Burgard, Lauren Smith-Morris, and Claire Agee swam to a 3rd place finish.

The boys 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams, consisting of captain Max Sanchez, James Holmes, Brian Arnold and Thomas Burnam, earned 5th place finishes while the boys team placed 7th overall in the region. Other notable swims include Sanchez’ 10th place finish in the 100 free and 14th in the 200 free, Holmes’ 10th in the 200 free and 14th in the backstroke, a 5th place finish by Arnold in the 100 breaststroke and 14th in the 200 IM, and Burnam’s 13th place in the 100 backstroke.

The team is coached by Brook Varner, and they will continue their 6am daily workouts until the state competition in Austin. Complete results from the Region 4-5A meet are available at http://www.woodrowwildcats.org/athletics/swimming/.
