Taking Care of Your Garden During the Winter

Winter in Texas is like any other season in our great state - completely unpredictable. It can be below freezing one day before becoming sunny and pleasant the next. Still, there are always tips and advice that can be followed to keep a garden in good shape through the winter months.

It may be a little late to say this but don't gather up and throw away all the leaves. Instead, run a lawn mower on mulch setting over the leaves several times until they're shredded and below the grass line. The leaves will decompose back into the soil and provide much needed nutrients for the grass during the winter. Using this simple trick can help a gardner save on buying compost and mulch, as well as reducing yard waste that fills up landfills.

Naturally, smaller and younger trees are at more of a risk than larger, older trees so protecting them is vital to keeping them alive. Wrap the trucks of younger trees with a commercial tree wrap to protect them from winter sun scald. Also, if the tree is an evergreen, spray the leaves or needles with anti-transpirant to prevent winter burn.

Add some winter plants to the garden to make it colorful and lively. Perennials will bring color and form to any garden during the winter while sea oats and side oats grama will add beauty while providing food for birds and animals.
