Cuellar Family’s Former Homestead in Lakewood Has Been Superbly Restored

Built in 1929, the Tudor home at 6629 Gaston Avenue was one of the first houses constructed north of Gaston in the Lakewood subdivision known as Country Club Estates. It has been superbly restored with modern amenities while keeping much of the old style and feel. Michelle Hopson of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate is offering the property for $859,000.

This historic structure served as the homestead for the Cuellar family for many years, as it was conveniently located near their El Chico restaurant in the Lakewood Shopping Center. Given its position in Dallas dining history, it was appropriate that the home’s kitchen would be enlarged and completed with soapstone counters, onyx backsplash, and an imported European island.

The kitchen updates were just part of the home’s extensive restoration. All electrical, sewer, water and gas lines were fully replaced, including underground service to the city supply. The original slate roof was painstakingly removed, cleaned, and reinstalled with a 100-percent new wood deck and underlayment. The windows were all replaced, with Pella insulated windows that were custom matched to the originals’ mull pattern. The basement has been restored and fashioned into a 13 by 10 wine cellar with stone floors and chandeliers.

All four bedrooms are on the second floor. The master suite has a sitting area with a coffee bistro, a wonderful marble bathroom with heated floors, the original claw-foot tub, and a generous custom stained-wood master closet. Both of the other two full bathrooms were remodeled with new materials to match the original bathtubs; one tub sports an aqua tone, while the other is lilac.

The home’s location in the Lakewood Elementary School attendance zone provides amazing views of the Downtown skyline and the Fourth of July fireworks show over the Lakewood Country Club.
