Woodrow Wilson's Cheerleaders are now accepting applications for this summer's popular Mini Cheer Camp. The camp is from Monday, July 24 to Friday, July 28, and is held at Woodrow Wilson High School.
The camp is run by the JV and Varsity cheerleaders and features cheer routines, crafts, snacks, a camp t-shirt, and an opportunity to cheer with the WWHS cheerleaders at a Woodrow football game during half time!
This camp sells out every year, so hurry and send in your child's application ASAP (attached)!
What does it take to be a Woodrow Wilson High School cheerleader? How about start practicing at age 5??
For the 12th year in a row, the Woodrow Wilson High School cheerleaders are hosting a summer cheer camp for girls ages 5 to 12. The cheer camp has become a tradition for many east Dallas children with dreams of being a part of the Wildcat spirit for the JL Long and Woodrow sports teams. The Varsity Cheer squad is graduating the first cheer campers from those camps of long ago, so dreams do come true! Woodrow’s IB English instructor Aariona Ferguson was the cheer coach for all of those years, and says that it is very rewarding to see the skills they learned years ago perfected so they can compete without delay at the state level, as Cheer becomes a UIL Title IX sport.
Her advice for aspiring cheerleaders is to continue to start as early as possible, and enroll in any kind of gymnastics, dance, or tumbling. She advises the girls stay physically active all of their lives, as cheerleaders are true athletes whose physical skills transcend most sports. Start auditioning for cheer in middle school, as being comfortable in an audition speaks volumes to the judges. And of course, SMILE; it's contagious!
As Cheerleading is on its’ way to being a UIL sport, there will be many advantages for our cheerleaders besides being funded through DISD, as college scholarships and grants become available for them.
What does this mean to a young cheer camper just happy to dance, chant, tumble and make life-long friends? They are already looking forward to Cheer Night, when they attend a Woodrow football game, sit together, and have a special performance at half time with their high school cheer mentors; all now friends for life!
