Lakewood Elementary is taking part in several good causes, and they need donations from families to help these causes succeed. The first thing the school needs are gently used children's books for their "Giving Tree" project. Second, the school is collecting food items for a Girl Scouts Food Drive.

The Giving Tree project aims to collect children's books to donate to hospitals, shelters and retirement homes. The school will collect the gently used books up until Tuesday, January 31, so scavenge the attic and closet for those unused children's books that the kids no longer read.

Lakewood Elementary is also helping the Girl Scouts with their food drive that will last through Friday, February 3. The goal of the food drive is to raise awareness of child hunger in the Lakewood community. The Girl Scouts have a goal of collecting 750 food items and are looking, in particular, for peanut butter, canned meat, soup, rice and beans. The collection boxes are located near the front office. All donations will go to the North Texas Food Bank.
