It's still a couple of months away but residents of Dallas should get an early jump on planning for "It's My Park Day" in March. For those that have never taken part, It's My Park Day is a community service initiative that park officials hope will encourage citizens to help enhance parks citywide.

Everyone is invited to attend and help out. People can sign up in groups - such as homeowners' associations, churches and civic groups - or as an individuals and just pitch in whenever they're needed. People can organize volunteer projects to help with litter and debris pick up, graffiti removal, weeding, mulching and planting flowers.

Volunteers are free to make this day as much fun as they can. The city encourages participants to have live music, an educational component, a picnic or any other activity. The city park officials will provide organizers and volunteers with maintenance and site-specific tips for making this event a success.

"With more than 20,000 acres of park land, volunteers are vital in assisting us in maintaining our parks. It's My Park Day is another way those with a passion for parks can improve the quality of life in Dallas," said Paul Dyer, director of Dallas Park and Recreation Department. "Over 690 volunteers through 36 organizations registered for our last event and citizen involvement is key to the present and future success of urban parks."

Individuals and groups who want to volunteer for or organize It's My Park Day activities should register by March 19 at the It's My Park Day website or by calling Dallas Park and Recreation at 214-670-8400.
