Students of the Bryan Adams High School Destination ImagiNation (DI) team had much to celebrate as they received news this week that they would be participating in the Destination ImagiNation Global Competition. This achievement marks the first time in Dallas ISD history that a comprehensive high school has advanced to Globals DI. The DI team, which is known as Toxic 6 + 1, will travel to the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville, the week of May 20for the four-day event. DI Sponsor Debra Jones, explained, “This is a team that is in Project Outreach which is the community service learning opportunity [portion of DI].” Toxic 6 + 1 will provide a presentation on anti-smoking and the effects that smoking can have on a person. It targets students in the elementary grades.

Through collaboration, DI students learn to boost their creativity, cultivate innovation and develop higher level thinking skills. The group spent months preparing for the State Competition, which was held on April 12th. It determined whether they would advance on to Globals. In preparation, the group presented their anti-smoking campaign to students at Alex Sanger Elementary School. They also conducted a sports clinic for the students that day. The all-day event helped the Bryan Adams students improve their stage presence while also engaging the younger students in the creativity process.

The Bryan Adams DI students will now spend the next few weeks perfecting the details of their presentation for Globals. Ms. Jones is already in the planning stage of pairing Bryan Adams DI students with a DI group from another country. At Globals, students will also have the opportunity to set a world record for the Guinness Book of World Records.  DI groups from around the world will rally together to break the record for the largest gathering of people wearing duct tape outfits. BA students will have to put their creativity to use as they each design an outfit made out of duct tape to wear to the event.

With only the top teams advancing to Globals, Bryan Adams Destination ImagiNation will be participating with great thinkers from around the world.  The Bryan Adams DI team members are Kaira Fuentes, Maria Garcia, Alejandro Arteago, Julian Carrino, Thomas Jennings, Monserat Cortes, and Daniela Gonzalez. Best of lunk to these students as they compete in Globals!
