Lakehill Preparatory School held a special ceremony on April 3, to honor seniors Connor Alexander and Ben Palmer, who announced that they will continue their varsity athletic pursuits at the college level.

Alexander will row for the Varsity Club team at Lehigh University, while Palmer will join the Southern Methodist University Mustangs as a preferred walk-on.

Both Alexander and Palmer are Lakehill Lifers, having attended the East Dallas private school since kindergarten. Palmer led this year's Warrior football team to the state playoffs, and was recognized with First Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-State honors. Alexander is a nationally-ranked member of Dallas United Crew, a team that encompasses rowers from across the city of Dallas.

As coaches, administrators, family, and friends gathered to cheer them on, Palmer and Alexander personally thanked those who had supported them on their journeys as students and athletes in heartfelt statements.

"I have known these young men since they were in kindergarten," said Headmaster Roger Perry. "I am impressed by their dedication to their academics and to their chosen sports. I am thrilled that they will be able to continue pursuing the sports they love at the college level."

Congratulations to these outstanding student-athletes.

On Tuesday, March 25, acclaimed Scholastic author Elly Swartz visited Lakehill Preparatory School. Organized by the Parent Faculty Club Book Fair Committee, Swartz spoke with students in grades four through six, inspiring the writers and illustrators of the future by sharing her own experiences as a writer.

After being introduced by two sixth grade students, Harper Kuhn and Paulette Maney, Ms. Swartz was interviewed by two fourth grade reporters, Anniston Barrett and Andres Vann.

Ms. Swartz shared her journey as a writer and the 15-year process of getting her original idea to a book on a shelf. Students were invited to ask questions, and were treated to the first chapter from the advanced reader copy of Give and Take, her new book coming out in October.

While she loved writing in fourth grade, Ms. Swartz confessed that she was not a good writer. She shared her philosophy: "The thing you are passionate about does not have to be the same thing you are good at today."

She specifically remembers when she decided she wanted to be a writer: after reading Mick Harte Was Here with her children, laughing and crying and and experiencing the full range of emotions. She loves being a writer, and connecting with her readers, learning what her stories mean to them. Developing a connection with her readers is important to Swartz, and she values the time she can spend in schools and with readers.

Ms. Swartz explained that the ideas for stories can come from anywhere - the dinner table or a yoga class - and encourages budding writers to write down their ideas. She spends a lot of time with the characters in her stories, getting to know them, their likes and dislikes, before she writes about them.

Ms. Swartz's advice for young writers is to read voraciously and to write about the things that matter to them. She encourages students to just keep writing and not to worry about what others think of their work. "I love writing more than I fear rejection," she explained.

After answering questions, Ms. Swartz signed copies of her books Smart Cookie and Finding Perfect.

They say there as many reasons to teach as there are teachers in the world. One of the biggest driving forces for me was fond memories of my childhood years, when imagination came so readily and everything was new and exciting. And, of course, fun times being an absolute goofball with my friends. Every year, when our new summer catalog is released, I find myself flipping through it to find the camps I would have loved as a kid. This year, there are so many!

Nothing captured my imagination more than stories of medieval times. I always wished I could travel back to the days of knights in shining armor, and I was forever sketching swords, shields, and dragons in my sketchpad (and on my homework!). Frankly, I still wish I could live in a castle! Camps like "Medieval Madness" and "Time Travelers" would have been at the top of my summer camp wish list! Who doesn't wonder what life in a bygone era was really like?

My World Geography students can tell you that one of my biggest loves is for languages. I've always enjoyed seeing the world through the lens of a new language and culture, trying out the sound of the language, the feel of their customs, and the foods they most enjoy.  I would have loved camps like "Fun and Games--Spanish Style" and "Fiesta Time! Arts and Crafts." Games and celebrations are, after all, the universal languages of childhood!

As I grew older, my tastes grew up with me. The little boy who grew up loving tales of knights and dragons turned into a young teen playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends. And, once I was old enough to cook without burning the house down, my interest in cultures morphed into an interest in cooking new things, experimenting with new flavors and seasonings. I would have been right at home in "Dungeons and Dragons--Beginners and Beyond" camp and "Home Grown Texas Cuisine."

Which Lakehill Summer Camps would you have loved as a child? Sadly, we parents are too old to sign up for the camps that our younger selves would have adored. But, it's not too late for your child to make some summer memories at Lakehill!

This past weekend, Lakehill Preparatory School freshman Luke Williams was recognized at the Dallas Teen Film Festival. Williams received honorable mention in the comedy category, which had more than 40 entries, for his short film Escape From Dog Island.

Using a claymation technique for his film, Williams initially began the project in his Digital Production class taught by Mark Guerra. “Luke came to me and asked if he could do a claymation movie for his upcoming project," said Guerra. "I knew it was quite a big task to accomplish, but he worked diligently on it while finishing other projects in the class. I was excited to watch his creative process as he wrote the script and created the storyboards.” The entire film took Williams about six weeks to produce, including the audio and original music.

The film centers around a group of dogs trapped on an island that are hunted each night by the native monster. Williams explained that the idea was based on a Lord of the Flies narrative, using dogs instead of humans. Williams also revealed that he does not like when films have talking dogs. "I find it unrealistic.” He corrected this in his film by personally creating the audio for all of the dog characters. Each dog has a unique bark and the tone changes throughout. This audio was accompanied by subtitles to reveal the dogs’ conversations.

Over the past few years, Williams also has been creating a comic TV show with his friend and fellow freshman Mika Davis, which they started in their seventh grade art class. The specifics remain secret while they pursue copyrights for their show. Williams's film will be presented during Lakehill’s slot in the ISAS film festival in April.

I know it is only February, and summer seems like a distant dream, but, here at Lakehill, summer camp preparations are in full swing. Calendars are being set; camp descriptions are being finalized; and the Lakehill Summer Camps staff is busy planning a summer full of fun and adventure at both our Main Campus and the Environmental Science Center.

As this process unfolds, a single thought keeps coming back to me: I wish I were a kid again!

This year's camp lineup looks fabulous: STEM, Community Connections, LEGO Engineering, Destination Dallas, and other perennial favorites are all lined up and ready to go, but it's the newest camps that have me really excited!

Our summer camp teachers are endlessly innovative, bringing fresh ideas to the table every summer. Build it Big...With Newspaper is a new twist on a classic building and engineering camp that kids have loved for years. Campers won't believe how strong flimsy paper can become when it's layered, twisted, rolled, pressed, and glued. It's a great lesson in understanding how the structure of a material is just as important as the substance when it comes to building. Dungeons and Dragons--Beginners and Beyond is new to the books this year, too. This classic game of collaborative storytelling is the grandfather of all fantasy games, and we're certain that new generations of kids will love it as much as generations past. Rock Star Music Videos puts the fun of film-making in your child's hands. Campers will script and act out scenes to accompany their favorite songs, filming and editing in iMovie on the iPads. All that in just the first week of camps! Check out the link to see even more offerings from June to August.

Take a look at our just-released  Summer Camps Guide. Camp registration goes live on February 22. And, sorry...these camps are only for kids!
