It's hard to believe that summer is almost over! Only two weeks remain in Lakehill's Summer Camps. We have had so much fun already, but there is still more fun to be had!

There will be many, many eggs broken next week (July 22-26)! In the morning, the Incredible, Indestructible Egg camp will be launching, dropping, blasting, and crushing eggs (all while trying to keep them from harm with kid-built safety and recovery systems) in this wacky engineering camp. In the afternoon, Gluten-Free Goodies will crack a few eggs on purpose to bake yummy muffins, cakes, and snacks that are 100% gluten-free and 100% delicious! Sign up now for either (or both) camps!

The following week (July 29-Aug. 2) is a week of imaginary adventure! In the morning, Time Travelers camp will visit lost civilizations from across the centuries, with projects and crafts to match each culture and time period. In the afternoon, Magic: The Gathering camp for Beginners and Beyond celebrates 18 years of Magic at Lakehill and the release of the latest set, Core Set 2020. This game of fantasy pits armies of goblins, dragons, and other fantasy fiends against elves, dwarfs, and other heroes.

Other camps still have openings, too, so visit  http://www.lakehillprep.org/summer-camps/  to sign up. Don't see the camp you're looking for? E-mail summercamps@lakehillprep.org to see if space has become available.

Summer Camps are in full swing at Lakehill Prep! I've been excited to see some of our new camp ideas find success already, and I'm looking forward to seeing more new ideas come to life later in the summer.

This was our first year offering Dungeons and Dragons camps! The classic role-playing game is more popular now than ever, and our first session was full to the brim with campers taking their imaginary fantasy characters on grand adventures. I suspect that this camp will be a popular one every summer. The June session was totally sold out, but the July session still has space available for kids who want to create fantasy characters of their own.

Our hands-on science camps are always a delight! Summer Science Spectacular for the younger crowd and Build It Big...With Newspaper for the older crowd saw kids discovering the properties of dry ice, building hot air balloons, and building towers that touched the ceiling! I want to be a kid again to join July's Grossology camp to perform slimy, goopy chemistry experiments and The Incredible, Indestructible Egg physics camp to save fragile eggs from all manner of catapulting, dropping, and crushing. Messy fun is the best fun!

July will be busy! We will host our first leatherworking camps, our annual favorite Warrior Youth basketball and volleyball camps, and themed camps that will take kids on journeys from the jungles of the Amazon to space and beyond. Our Take the Stage camp will feature Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic, a delightful parody of Harry Potter. There's a camp to suit everyone's interest.

Which camp would you want to attend if you were a kid again?

Lakehill Preparatory School's Baccalaureate Ceremony was held on Sunday, May 19, at Lakehill's Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center.

A time-honored Lakehill tradition, the ceremony provides an opportunity for each member of the graduating class to publicly thank the people who have made it possible for them to get to this moment of achievement in their lives. The afternoon of thoughtful reflection and heartfelt emotion provided a more intimate opportunity to pause and reflect on this rite of passage.

Lakehill seniors are rapidly approaching the end of their high school careers. Recently, they had the opportunity to slow things down a bit and celebrate the journey that has brought them to this point as Lakehill celebrated Senior Day.

Seniors began their day with a catered breakfast in the cafeteria with their parents. They then headed to the auditorium for an assembly in honor of the Class of 2019. They were escorted by Lakehill's youngest students, the Class of 2031.

The Senior Class sponsors introduced each student and shared his or her college plans. Each senior also had the opportunity to pass down a personal Lakehill memento to a lucky raffle winner. From athletic jerseys and shoes to a calculator and a book of Chinese poetry, there was no limit to the priceless treasures passed on to the underclassmen.

Lakehill Preparatory School's 21st annual Mark Twain Day celebrated the culmination of the fifth grade unit of study on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

The event offered fourth and fifth grade students the chance to have fun the old-fashioned way: sack races, bobbing for apples, and fence painting. Students also competed in a variety of good-natured contests, including sunflower seed spitting, pie eating, and bragging.

The fifth grade students said they loved making the miniature rafts, dressing up as the characters, and playing games that kids played more than a hundred years ago.

Students honored for the most authentic costumes included Madeline Jones (Becky Thatcher), Ian Johnston (Tom Sawyer), and Clio Byrd (Huck Finn). Honorable Mention went to Grafton Robinson.

Jason Dickerson took the top prize for the jury-evaluated rafts, with Max Crist taking second. Grace Horne and Maya Patel took third, and Cece Degeyter and Jax Henegar claimed honorable mention.

Lakehill dad Ross Crum played the role of Mark Twain, conducting the bragging contest. Fourth graders enjoyed dressing up like Tom Sawyer's heroes - circus performers, pirates, and outlaws.

Karin Matz and Susan Widhalm organized a great team of parent volunteers who made the event go smoothly.

Receive a patient file. Research and determine your diagnosis and treatment approach. Present your findings to a group of Attendings – and be prepared to answer their questions.

This experience is not typically associated with middle school, but for Lakehill Preparatory School science teacher Bryna Thomson’s seventh graders it has been part of the curriculum since the 2013-14 school year. While studying the human body has always been included in seventh grade science, it was not until Thomson attended some professional development classes that she got the idea to create Grand Rounds, a “project-based learning” lesson for this area.

Over the years, she has adapted it to create a challenge that gives students the chance to experience what becoming a doctor would be like. Students are divided into groups and create their own “clinics,” with each one staffed with a variety of medical specialists. Each clinic presents information about their patient, health issues faced, diagnostic tests run, and the diagnosis the “doctors” determined. They then present their recommended treatment, including medications required.

“I hope that this is a much more fun and interactive way to learn about the human body,” said Thomson. “It is a great deal of work, but students get a lot of experience out of it. I also want them to get an idea of different fields of study they can pursue in the future.”

Each year, the Attendings are composed of Lakehill parents who are doctors and nurses. This year’s panels were made up of veterans Paula GillmanBrent WalkerWaleed El-Feky, and Ambareen Salam. New this year were Devra LangfordKelly Johnson, and Denise Sullivan.

Seventh grader Isabel Ketterson enjoyed the experience, but acknowledged it was hard work. “I really liked it, but it could be stressful at times. You really had to work well with your group to get anything done.” She was most worried about presenting to the Attendings, “but it was just three nice doctors.”

"I was impressed with the comprehensive presentations of each group," said Sullivan, a pediatric anesthesiologist. "The students were able to assimilate and discuss fairly complex information and address all questions posed by the panelists in a very thoughtful and logical manner. The Grand Rounds format is the method used in medical schools and academic hospitals to present interesting and challenging cases, so I think the students were able to get a glimpse of how physicians approach patient care in a very realistic way. Hopefully, some will be inspired to pursue a career in the medical field."

"I enjoyed learning about the procedures that real doctors take to diagnose a patient and start their treatment," said seventh grader Vivek Patel. "It gave me an idea of what it would be like to be a real doctor and further supported my desire to be an orthopedic surgeon when I grow up."
