On February 18, Lakehill fourth grade students gathered for the Invention Convention, a much anticipated event that tests students' ability to link simple machines together in order to perform a task. The annual event is inspired by the works of cartoonist and engineer Rube Goldberg.

Goldberg was fascinated by how humans seemed determined to make the simplest tasks unnecessarily complicated, and that is exactly what the fourth graders did as they set out to create the ridiculous, often hilariously complex machines.

After careful planning, students built their contraptions out of scavenged materials, such as school supplies, duct tape, and cardboard boxes. Many inventions solved common tasks, such as dispensing sprinkles on cupcakes, slicing a chocolate bar, or opening a book.

Inventions were judged on creativity, use of simple machines, and the ability to explain what steps in the invention required the most trial and error to perfect. If a particular mechanism failed to work as planned, students were given credit for the step if they could explain how they would adjust or replace the malfunctioning part in order to fix the machine. Students learned that plans and models must often be modified in order to achieve the desired result, and that inventors rarely get it right the first time.

On February 10, Lakehill's third grade students stepped into a museum. Not as visitors, but this time as the exhibits themselves.

To culminate a unit on Texas heroes and explorers, students had the unique opportunity to bring the person that they had researched to life, complete with amazing costumes, backdrops, and props. Students wrote their own speeches that they presented to a large audience in the auditorium.

Explorers and heroes, including Jose Antonio Navarro, Clara Driscoll, and James Bonham, filled the auditorium stage and aisles. One by one, they shared their stories and their contributions to Texas.

"We are so proud of the students' hard work, research skills, and creativity," said third grade teacher Meredith Sauer. "They have grown immensely this year. It was a wonderful celebration of Texas History."

Lakehill eighth graders got a glimpse into their futures when they visited the University of North Texas (UNT) on February 5. Each year, Director of College Counseling Heather Dondis takes the eighth grade class to participate in UNT's Office of Outreach program, which is one of the few programs allowing students of all ages to take campus tours and attend an informational presentation about UNT.

The walking tour allowed the group to see a residence hall, the music school, the health and services center, as well as the activities center. When the tour was finished, the students were treated to buffet-style lunch in the university dining hall where they dined among the college students.

Following the informational presentation, eighth graders got to experience the social side of UNT, enjoying ice cream and shopping in Denton Square. "For many of the students, it's the first time they have ever been on a college campus," says Dondis. "The best part is hearing the students ask questions and get involved during the tour because it allows me to get to know what they are looking for in a college."

When asked about the best part of the trip, Haley Lopez responded, "Going into the dorm rooms and seeing how they are situated, so I know what I am going to have to live in for four years." Ella Witherite answered, "The coolest thing I experienced was just how big the campus was and how different it was from regular school."
