The Lakehill Class of 2017 stands at the threshold of new beginnings and opportunities, looking forward to the new challenges ahead.
This year's Valedictorians are Kelly Carlson and Chambliss Pierson. Kelly will attend the University of Tennessee in the fall to study psychology, while Chambliss will attend the University of Southern California to study Business Administration with a concentration in International Relations.

The Salutatorian is Abi Price. Abi plans to study mechanical engineering at Auburn University.

Members of the Senior Class have just completed their two-week internships as part of their graduation requirements and presented a summary of their work to a faculty committee. They will take their final walk across the Lakehill stage on May 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Lakehill's forty-fourth Commencement Ceremony.

Once again, 100% of Lakehill graduates will continue on to college. Together, the thirty-two graduates have received more than 5.5 million dollars in academic scholarships.

Lakehill Preparatory School seventh grader Luke Stout, who elected to take the SAT as part of the Duke University Seventh Grade Talent Search, recently received State Recognition for his efforts. 
 
The Duke University Seventh Grade Talent Search identifies academically talented seventh graders based on their standardized test scores. Candidates are then invited to complete either the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. The goal is to provide them with information about their abilities while introducing them to a network of services and enrichment programs.

Lakehill's National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) held a combined Induction Ceremony on April 18 in Lakehill's Charles Wyly Auditorium. NHS President Salma El-Feky and NJHS President Claire Howard plus officers assisted with the presentation. Headmaster Roger Perry offered his appreciation for the efforts members have made throughout the year, and the example they set for others.

Nineteen new members were inducted into the Warrior Chapter of the NHS, an honor society for students in grades 10 to 12. Students must have a 3.5 GPA for the previous three semesters to be eligible for membership. The NHS Faculty Council then reviews each eligible student's application for character, service, and positive leadership.

This year's inductees are Charity Abengowe, Connor Alexander, Brandon Bartholow, Julia Bartholow, Eli Buxt, Joanna Chen, Gerard Franklin, Ben Gillman, Greg Gillman, Kumail Imam, Kate Langley, Tyler McCall, Elizabeth Motes, Ben Palmer, Antoni Perez-Stark, Justin Reed, Montgomery Rotellini, Amy Tang, and Dylan Welch.

Nineteen students were inducted into Lakehill's Golden Arrow Chapter of NJHS. To be considered, students must have attended Lakehill for three semesters and maintain a 3.3 GPA. Those selected must demonstrate outstanding scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship, and character.

This year's inductees include seventh-grade students Ella Berry, Claire Blomquist, Charlie Borowczak, Ava Cunningham, Lucie Daudelin, Madison Deason, Alexander Dondis, Megan Gillman, Brooke Granado, Henry Hopkins, Macy Moskovic, Spencer Neill, Prahlad Pant, Brett Peacock, Blake Perry, Mara Sandberg, Graysen Walker, and Laurel Way, and eighth grader Christian Barefoot.

Congratulations to these outstanding students.

Lakehill is not afraid to confront uncomfortable subjects such as racism and the Holocaust in its curriculum. The Lakehill community is lucky. Very few of have had to encounter the segregation, discrimination, and religious persecution that is discussed in the classroom. However, these are not abstracts confined to textbooks. 
 
At an assembly for students in sixth through twelfth grade, Max Glauben, a Holocaust survivor, shared his testimony about actions which we consider impossible, yet are, indeed, possible. For almost an hour, Glauben shared his experiences between the ages of 11, when the Nazis invaded his homeland, Poland, and 15, when American troops liberated  him and others during a death march to Dachau. His story provided his audience with a powerful example of the indomitable human spirit and the will to survive.

Glauben has been sharing his story with audiences for more than 30 years, representing not only himself, but also the more than one million Jewish children who perished during the Holocaust. He left his Lakehill audience with three pieces of advice: 1) to never, never, never give up; 2) to remember that your brain is the most important computer you have; and 3) to speak out against injustice and not be a bystander.

A breezy day, a kite, and a kid - a Saturday morning at its finest. This old-school pastime became a new favorite for hundreds of students from Bayles Elementary and their families during this year's annual Kite Day celebration on April 8.
 
The fields at Lakehill's Roger L. Perry Campus provided the perfect location. Volunteers handed out 500 kites and offered guidance to novice kite fliers and their families. The Lion's Club fired up the grill to serve a hot dog lunch to all who attended.
  
As the sky came alive with hundreds of colorful, dancing kites, spirits soared back on the ground.

Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics), Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish), Société Honoraire de Français (French), Rho Kappa (Social Studies), Science National Honor Society, and International Thespian Society, six of Lakehill's student honor societies, held their induction ceremonies on April 12 in Lakehill's Charles Wyly Auditorium. These groups welcomed 60 inductees into their illustrious ranks. The ceremony was led by faculty sponsors Susie Brigham, Joan Mayo, Tamra Badgett, Jamie Thorne, Jeremy Holman, and Mark Guerra.

Membership in Mu Alpha Theta at Lakehill is reserved for juniors and seniors who have maintained a "B" average or better in all math classes. French and Spanish honorees must complete at least three years of the language and maintain an average of 3.5 or higher. Rho Kappa honorees must have completed four semesters of Social Studies, and maintain a 3.0 overall and a 3.5 in all high school Social Studies classes. 

Membership in the Science National Honor Society is awarded to juniors and seniors who have maintained a 3.0 in all coursework, have taken or are enrolled in at least one Honors or AP Science class (juniors) or one Honors course and one AP course, or two AP courses (seniors), and maintain a 3.5 average in all science courses. Members inducted into the International Thespian Society have completed at least 100 hours of high school theater experience, either on stage or behind the scenes. Members of these highly regarded organizations wear honor cords at graduation. 

Inductees to the International Thespian Society were freshmen Elizabeth Blanchard, Thea Gilliland, Mia Militello, Jonah Shaw, and Alanna Stern, sophomores Sarah Bradley and Anna Somodevilla, and juniors Jacob Besser and Reese Brown.
 
Mu Alpha Theta honorees were seniors Charity Abengowe, Zac Aaron, Kelly Carlson, Alex Tracy, and Jenson Zhou, and juniors Arjun Agrawal, Shelby Britton, Gerard Franklin, Arthur Hu, Jonathan Kelley, Warren Lester, Lovely Lopez, Steven Murff, Ashley Peacock, Toni Perez-Stark, Dayton Steinbach, Amy Tang, Regan Yuan, Judy Zhu, and Ryan Zhu.

This year's Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica inductees were seniors Noah Bernstein, Zain Imam, Charlie Pippen, and McKinney Waggoner.

Seniors Claire Crow, Tillie McCoskey, Chambliss Pierson, Abi Price, and Lily Turner were inducted into the Société Honoraire de Français. 
Rho Kappa inductees were seniors Noah Bernstein, Kelly Carlson, and Blake Farokhnia, juniors Lauren Bush, Jonathan Kelley, Steven Murff, and Ashley Peacock, and sophomores Eli Buxt, Ben Gillman, Kumail Imam, Kate Langley, Tyler McCall, Elizabeth Motes, and Montgomery Rotellini.

The newly-inducted members of the Science National Honor Society are juniors Reese Brown, Lauren Bush, Warren Lester, Steven Murff, Ashley Peacock, Amy Tang, Regan Yuan, and Judy Zhu.

Audiences took delight in the Upper School Drama Department's performance of Kate Hamill's adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, which lit up the Lakehill stage under the skilled direction of Mark Guerra. 

Sense and Sensibility is a social comedy of manners, giving us a glimpse into 18th century social circles. The story follows 
 
An elegant and poised Waggonner was gracious, restrained, and noble in her suffering as Elinor. Milatello gave a glowing performance as Marianne, spontaneous and emotional, flinging herself into everything from reciting Shakespeare to romance.
 
Noah Bernstein was a charming scoundrel as Marianne's love interest, John Willoughby. Elinor's affections lie with Edward Ferrars (made delightfully awkward byCharlie Pippen), a dear family friend whose choice of a bride lays firmly in the iron fist of his rich, elderly relative. Warren Lester and Tillie McCoskey were over-the-top sensational as Sir John Middleton and Mrs. Jennings.
 
Macy Ellis, Dylan Welch, Elizabeth Blanchard, Braden Burt, Elizabeth Motes,Thea Gilliland, Alanna Stern, Kira Willis, Justin Reed, Kumail Imam, George Cheng, John Hirata, and Anna Somodevilla rounded out the ensemble.

"Working on this show was a challenge because the subject matter is of very mature nature, but I was impressed with how the actors were able to embody these wonderful characters and really tell the story that Jane Austen gave us," said Guerra.
 
For a play about behaving yourself and practicing decorum, Sense and Sensibility was filled with unrestrained freshness and life.

On April 3, Visual Arts Chair Scott Boles took 22 selected works of art created by Lakehill Preparatory School visual art students in his drawing, painting, computer graphics, and sculpture classes and Cat Huitt's ceramics and weaving classes to Waco, Texas for the 2017 TAPPS State Art Championship competition.  
 
Sophia Liu won overall Individual State Champion with the most points by a competitor with 68 points. Liu also garnered a first place gold medal in each of the following categories: senior portfolio, drawing black and white, drawing color, communication design, 2D mixed media, and painting (first and second place).
 
Competing against 18 other Division 3A schools from the state of Texas, seven Lakehill students placed high enough to accumulate 87 points and earn the State Championship Runner-up title.  
 
Lakehill students won eight medals an d six ribbons in the seven categories they entered. They competed against a total of 327 entries for all the categories they were in.
