Computer science drives innovation throughout the U.S. economy, but it remains marginalized throughout K-12 education. While nine out of 10 parents want their child to study computer science, only one in four schools offer computer programming. 
 
Although Lakehill Preparatory School already offers a comprehensive computer science program, students of all ages joined in the fun and participated in this week's Hour of Code. Students in kindergarten and first grade are learning Kodable and Candy Quest (through Tynker) on desktops while second through fourth grades are using the resources on code.org that have been widely expanded this year. Student favorites include Minecraft and Star Wars which both offer block and JavaScript options for learning.
 
Middle and Upper School Computer Science classes have been coding all year. Fifth graders continued their study of coding through Scratch, while Upper School students worked on a digital assistant project, learning how Siri works and how to code an app that acknowledges and answers questions. Students in Upper School Computer Science I are working in code.org, learning the basics of computer science through making apps. Students are also working on using and processing arrays through the creation of an app that shows the student's favorite things.
 
"What's exciting about Computer Science at Lakehill is that we have a wide variety of Computer Science and Technology classes available, so students can tailor their technology education to their own interests," said Computer Science Chair Jennifer Herta. "It is important for all students to have an understanding of technology to be literate in today's world, and, beyond that, for our students to be able to compete in Computer Science and Technology at a global level."

Each year, the Greater East Dallas Chamber of Commerce recognizes teachers who have made significant contributions in the classroom and in the community. They are selected based on professional practice, community engagement, leadership in professional development, and attention to diversity.
 
Lakehill Preparatory School Mathematics teacher Ellen Kufel was recognized as the Private Middle School Teacher of the Year. Kufel said she was honored to receive this year's award. "I began my career 28 years ago and hope to have left an imprint on many lives. I could not be any more satisfied with my life’s choice. I didn’t choose teaching; it was already in my DNA; it is who I am."
 
"I am consistently amazed by the skills Ellen is able to impart in her students and her boundless enthusiasm for providing opportunities to them," said Assistant Head of School, Lara Gajkowski. "She inspires children mathematically and instills in them a sense of accomplishment and pride. Ellen is a passionate teacher who kindles the love and support of her students by providing the right balance of structure, accountability, and fun."
 
"It does not get any better than this," said Kufel. "It's hard to imagine receiving such an honor for doing what you love to do! I especially would like to thank the Lakehill faculty, staff, and administration for their support, guidance, and confidence year round."
 
Two additional Lakehill teachers were selected as finalists in the competition. Tracy Herron was recognized in the High School category, while Laura Stout was a finalist in the Elementary School category.
 
The Teacher of the Year Awards Program solicits nominations from all public and private schools in East Dallas as well as from business and community leaders. On November 14, Chamber of Commerce Chairman Andrea Saunders presented awards to the winners at a luncheon in their honor. Set against the natural beauty of Lakehill's Alice and Erle Nye Family Environmental Science Center, the day was a fitting tribute to East Dallas's finest teachers.

Lakehill Preparatory School's talented musical theater students took to the stage on November 11 and 12, to present the beloved classic Camelot.
 
Borrowing from the Arthurian legends, Lerner and Loewe's Camelot centers around an idealistic young King Arthur (played by an earnest Warren Lester), who hopes to create a kingdom built on honor and dignity, embodied by his Knights of the Round Table. His ideals, however, are tested when his lovely queen, Guinevere (played with great feeling and strong vocals by Lauren Bush), falls in love with the young knight Lancelot, and the fate of the kingdom hangs in the balance. 
 
The production featured a collection of unforgettable songs centering around a well-rendered love triangle involving Arthur, Guinevere, and Arthur’s right-hand man, Lancelot du Lac (Asher Chamoy), that depicts the conflict between love, honor, and duty.
 
As Arthur, a man who is prodigious on the battlefield but who wants to replace the “might makes right” ethos with a new age of reason, Lester expressed worlds of emotion in a glance, especially the mix of anguish, sadness, and love when he comes to realize the depth of feeling between Lance and his beloved “Ginny.” Bush revealed a youthful girl's unfulfilled longings and conflicted heart with great emotion through both her acting and her vocals.
 
Chamoy was perfectly cast as an idealistic Lancelot who, despite his spiritual dedication, falls prey to human emotions. He captured Lancelot's essential decency and nobility.
 
Jacob Besser provided a respite from the drama as Arthur’s ally King Pellinore, and Keegan Clendenin was a dynamic villain as Arthur’s evil, illegitimate son Mordred. Also shining in featured roles were Elizabeth Blanchard as the magical tutor Merlyn, Reese Brown as the enchantress Nimue, and Katie McKnight as the bewitching Morgan Le Fey.
 
The stripped-down stage was a perfect backdrop for the elaborate costumes. The Lakehill production showcased the talents of 33 Upper School students.
 
Lakehill's production featured stage direction by Mark Guerra and musical direction by Tracy Herron. Jeff Lankov provided musical accompaniment, while Catherine D'Annibale coordinated the costumes. Second grade teacher Emily Wolfe lent her talents as choreographer. Junior Kate Langley served as Stage Manager.

The Upper School at Lakehill provides a traditional, college preparatory course of study, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to be successful in college.

Upper School students have the opportunity to work with highly qualified, enthusiastic teachers, most of whom have advanced degrees. Students take required classes in English, social studies, science, mathematics, foreign language, computer science/technology, and fine arts. They also may choose from a wide array of electives and athletics. Since college preparation is a constant goal, all classes are considered to be at an honors level. The Lakehill Warriors football team ran its season record to seven wins and two losses and its district record to 2-0 with a 75-44 victory over Rockwall Heritage Christian on November 3. 
 
The Warriors were led by senior Gerard Franklin. He threw for two touchdowns, ran for 148 yards and four touchdowns, and caught one pass for 15 yards, plus had an interception on defense. 
 
Avery Meiteen and Ryan Henry each caught a touchdown pass. Warren Lester, Ben Palmer, Ryan Henry, and Gaige McKnight each had a rushing touchdown. 
 
Defense was led by Palmer's 11 tackles, five of which were for losses. Jonah Shaw had 10 tackles, Lester and Henry had seven tackles each. Senior Jonathan Kelley was 5–7 on extra points and had several good kick offs. 
 
After a loss to District Champions Dallas Lutheran, the Warriors will host the first round of the State Playoffs on Saturday, November 18, against Amarillo San Jacinto Christian. Kick-off is at 2:00 p.m. at the Warrior Athletic Complex.

Lakehill Preparatory School's 19th Annual Trek for Tech will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017.   


The one-mile Fun Run and registered 5K chip-timed race begin and end at Lakehill's Main Campus at 2720 Hillside Drive, with the course winding through the school's Lakewood neighborhood. 

The Fun Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 9:00 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow the races at 10:00 a.m. Awards for the 5K race will be presented to the first overall male and female finishers, the first male and female students, and the top three finishers in the following age groups: 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+. Medals will be awarded to everyone who completes the one-mile Fun Run. 

The race is also open to the public. Online registration is available here until 8:00 p.m. on November 3.

On-site registration and packet pick-up is available at Lakehill's Main Campus from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. on November 2 and 3, and on race day until 8:00 a.m. Registration is $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the race. All proceeds are used for technology enhancements for the school.
