A Day On, Not a Day Off

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' ~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and the first national day of service in 2018. The Points of Life Foundation calls for a day on, not a day off, and offers ideas on how to get involved on January 15. Attend an MLK parade or event, or volunteer with a local community organization.  I am now two weeks into my 52 Weeks of Service and am excited about my year of doing more for others. Perhaps MLK Day can be the start to your year-long commitment to service. There are so many ways to serve. Follow along with me this year and find out how you can get involved in your community.

Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something. ~Author unknown

Small, daily acts of kindness can have a profound impact.

This year, I am setting forth on a personal quest: to volunteer every week of the year, with a different organization each time. Fifty-two different non-profits to learn about and work with. Fifty-two weeks of service.

I fully believe that helping others can make the world a better place. One person at a time, one day at a time, and one project at a time, you, too, can make a difference that will leave a lasting impact.

In my Community Connections service club at Lakehill Preparatory School, our mantra is, “It’s not about me.” So how do I incorporate that into my life and set an example for others to follow?

When it comes to making a difference, nothing matters more than simply taking action. Every effort counts, no matter how small it may seem. As we say in Community Connections, “Just do something.”

It doesn’t matter how old you are, where you live, or how much money you have. You just have to show up…and just do something. Keep in mind that the most valuable skills you can bring to any volunteer assignment are compassion, an open mind, a willingness to do whatever is necessary, and a positive attitude.

While I suspect most of my projects will focus on nonprofits in Dallas, Texas, as that is where I live and work, I am also looking forward to exploring opportunities in other cities when my family and I travel. My hope is that these activities will inspire others to seek out opportunities in their own communities.

Let’s get started!

Follow along with our 52 Weeks of Service.

Eighteen members of Lakehill Preparatory School's Upper School took time out of their holiday break to participate in a Warrior Outreach Organization (WOO) event at Dallas Life Homeless Shelter on December 19. Volunteers served lunch, assisted residents with water and trays, washed dishes, and cleaned tables. ""I am thrilled with how many students turned out for the event," said WOO President Natalie Sevilla. "Working at Dallas Life was a completely different experience than anything we have done in the past, and I really enjoyed the experience. It took on special meaning to be able to volunteer there during the holidays. I left feeling extremely grateful, and aware that I shouldn't take anything for granted." Sophomore Hamed El-Feky agreed. "When you work at Dallas Life, you know you are doing something positive for the community," he said.

WOO, an initiative of the Upper School Student Council, was founded in 2014 to increase community service opportunities for high school students. "Students are always looking for more ways to serve," continued Sevilla. "It's nice to wake up in the morning and start the day by doing something positive."

Students are already excited about the next WOO project, scheduled for January 20, tutoring children through Heart House Dallas, an organization that serves refugee families in the Vickery Meadow area of Dallas. In addition to the upcoming Upper School Day of Service on February 2, WOO has projects scheduled for February 24 at Crossroads Community Services, March 24 at East Lake Pet Orphanage, and April 21 at Voice of Hope.

"We have had a tremendous response to the year's events," said Community Service Coordinator and WOO Co-sponsor Gigi Ekstrom. "Our three co-presidents (Sevilla, Kumail Imam, and Georgia Ferguson) have done a fantastic job planning events and encouraging others to attend."

WOO events are open to all high school students.

Dr. Gary Haynes performs for Lakehill's Lower School.
On December 14, just before the holiday parties, Lakehill Preparatory Lower School students were treated to a special concert by fourth grade teacher Dr. Gary Haynes. A noted composer, Haynes holds a PhD in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Minnesota. He also holds degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder and Hastings College.

Dr. Haynes has written a wide variety of music, including works for chorus and orchestra, song cycles for voice and orchestra, song cycles for voice and piano, five collections of works for solo piano, 11 works for saxophone quartets and octets, and other instrumental works.

His works have received performances throughout the United States, and in Canada, England, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Italy, Norway, and the former Soviet Union. His music has been described as "wonderfully lyrical, rhapsodic pieces, conceived in a dissonant harmonic idiom that revolves around strictly-controlled tonal centers."

An important focus of the fourth grade year is students sharing their achievements with their classmates. After discussing with his fourth graders how it is often difficult to share these accomplishments and perform in front of a crowd, he decided to set an example by sharing his own talents. "I always knew he was more than just a fourth grade teacher, and it was really exciting to see him perform today," said fourth grader Ian Johnston. "The music was very different. I really liked it."

Applications for the 2018-19 school year are due January 12, 2018. Find out more about Lakehill here.

For more than 40 years, Lakehill Preparatory School has been opening its doors to elderly members of the Dallas community for the much beloved tradition of the Holiday Luncheon. I have enjoyed participating in this tradition as an Upper School student for the past four years.

Each grade has progressively more complex responsibilities. Freshman entertain the guests over coffee and cookies after they have had their meal.

Sophomores have the important job of taking and delivering the guests’ photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus placed into a hand-decorated frame. This provides each guest with a special souvenir from the luncheon.

Junior year features the class in traditional reindeer and elf costumes, the parade for Lower School with special guest appearances from none other than Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and the coveted Reindeer Games.

As seniors, the class shops for the food, decorates the cafeteria, serves the guests, and cleans up after the event. Senior parents help prepare the turkeys for the luncheon. This year, there were a record-breaking 209 guests.

From easing into the Luncheon our freshman year, to running it our senior year, the Holiday Luncheon has been a staple in my experience at Lakehill. Each year, seeing familiar faces, making lasting connections with the guests, bonding with friends over shared experiences, are highlights of mine and so many other Lakehill students' experiences.

The Varsity Cheerleaders competed in the TAPPS Division 2 Large Division State Competition on November 29-30, in Waco, Texas. The team placed fifth overall, which, according to Varsity Cheer Coach Mylana Burt, is "amazing, because we were competing against large competition squads."

The entire Upper School gathered in the cafeteria to watch the live stream of the event and show their support.

Junior Tyler McCall was honored with First Team All-State. Senior Reese Brown and sophomore Loveth Heard received Second Team All State.

Congratulations to the Varsity cheer squad on their outstanding performance.
