Lakehill Preparatory School sophomore Hamed El-Feky completed his first high school national triathlon on April 27, 2018, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The 2018 USA Triathlon High School National Championships was hosted in conjunction with the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships. The race distances for a Sprint Triathlon are a 750-meter swim, 21.45-kilometer bike, and a five-kilometer run.

USA Triathlon announced a few days before the race that the course for all races would be shifted from a triathlon (swim-bike-run) to a duathlon (run-bike-run) to ensure athlete safety. Heavy rainfall in Tuscaloosa in the week prior to the event led to the Holt Dam spillway gates being opened by local officials to avoid flooding. Heightened volume in the Black Warrior River necessitated that the gates remain open through race weekend, resulting in overly strong currents that were deemed unsafe for swimming.

El-Feky practiced an average of two hours per day to prepare for the race, focusing on the open water swim. His goals were to swim at a pace of 1:25 minute per 100 meters, bike at 20 miles per hour, and keep a pace of 6:45 minutes per mile on the run, consistent with the times for the 25th ranked participant in the 2017 nationals. El-Feky reached these goals in the weeks prior to the event. The change in the structure of the race, plus a cramp during the bike portion, put him in 53rd position out of 79 competitors.

El-Feky plans to better his finish next year, and will compete in the Sprint National Age Group Championships on August 12, in Cleveland, Ohio, to give him more experience on the national stage.

"Even with the changes to the race format, it was an amazing experience to compete in a race of this caliber," said El-Feky. "The competitive atmosphere was entirely different from anything I had done before. I can't wait to race again."

In Lakehill's Lower School, it doesn't get much better than Field Day. With excitement high and a glorious sunny day, Lower School parents came out in force to put on a field day to be remembered.

Dressed in class shirts proudly displaying their team names, students started the event with their class cheers. The afternoon was full of fun and games, including everything from water balloon launching to an obstacle course to a Dunk Tank with Head of Lower School, Mr. Trout. Most of all, the children enjoyed being outside in the warm weather and having fun with their friends.

Students finished the day with icy treats, served with style from a Paleta cart. Thanks to organizers Tricia Neerman and Stacie Smith and their team of parent volunteers who manned the events, everything ran smoothly and was great fun.

Lakehill Preparatory School junior Vanya Suchan recently had an essay that she completed for her A.P. American Literature class accepted to the Adelaide Literary Magazine, a professional literary journal. Those reading her article are professional academics and specialists in the field. Her writing, according to the journal, is of post-graduate quality. Suchan wrote and work-shopped her paper in her junior English class over the period of several months and then submitted it to a number of journals. It will be published both in print and digitally in their next volume.

"In her to-be published paper, Ms. Suchan's creative and literary voice grapples with the essential difficulties of human existence through negotiating a dialogue between the beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl' and film director May Harron's American Psycho," said English teacher Michael Jones. "I am happy and humbled to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented thinker and writer on this project."

"I have known for a long time that I want to be a writer," said Suchan. "This process really solidified that desire for me and gave me confidence that I can make it in the world as a writer. There's a saying that if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. Nothing would make me happier than doing this."

Suchan was previously published in The Dallas Morning News as part of their Storytellers without Borders program for young journalists.

Read Suchan's submission here, available on May 22.

It’s that time of year again, when the school year is winding down and summer camps are getting ready to launch. I’m such a kid at heart, and poring through the camps catalog always makes me wish that I were a kid again! There are so many camps that young Johnny Trout would have loved!

When I was in lower elementary, I would have been really excited about “Royalty Rules!” and “Eek! Bugs!” I was always building forts and castles where knights (usually my friends or younger cousins) would serve the king (me of course!). I also enjoyed learning about the past and how things were back in the “olden days,” though it didn’t even occur to me that what that really meant was that I enjoy history. “Royalty Rules!” would have been perfect blend of these two interests! And, when I wasn’t building forts, I was digging in the dirt for bugs. The natural world has always fascinated me, and a camp devoted to our multi-legged skittering friends would have been right up my alley!

In late elementary, I discovered two things: I really enjoy cooking, and superheroes are awesome! So, I would have been making tracks to “Simply Snacks” camp and “Mutants, Marvels, and Superheroes.” I love the empowerment of cooking camps; I remember being quite pleased when I made a treat that someone else enjoyed as much as I did, and I still enjoy cooking today. And, though I loved reading comics and enjoying comic book characters, I always wanted to take it to the next level by creating my own characters and stories, and making my own fantastic worlds come to life. These camps would have been perfect for me!

In middle and upper school, I discovered that I love making things. The “Advanced Puppetcraft Workshop” camp would have been perfect for me. The emphasis on sewing technique and well-planned designs means creating and constructing a puppet that is fun, meaningful, and built-to-last. I also discovered my love of the English Language throughout the centuries. “Summer with the Bard” camp would have given me the chance to practice my best Elizabethan Shakespeare accent while doing something else I simply didn’t do enough when I was growing up: performing in front of a crowd! I had horrible stage-fright until I was an adult, but Shakespeare and the company of friends would have helped me shake that much sooner!

These camps and more still have seats available this summer, but time is running out to sign up! If you think your child would love any of these camps as much as I would have, sign up today. If you wait too long, you might find that I took the last seat myself!

The Lakehill Upper School biology class traveled to Galveston Island on April 26-29, to dive a little deeper into their studies.

While in Galveston, students had the chance to explore a salt marsh to collect a variety of small fishes, crabs, and comb jellies by dragging a long seine through the waist-deep water. They also collected specimens with a trawl net in the deeper water of the Houston Ship Channel.

Students toured many of the smaller channels of the estuary in kayaks, allowing them to get a closer look at this important ecosystem. Egrets and herons quietly stalked and expertly snatched their prey, just feet in front of the kayaks. To help students understand the individual components of the habitat, they painted the landscape using water-color paints.

The class also spent time at Brazos Bend State Park where they observed alligators in their natural environment. A visit to the George Observatory expanded their knowledge of astronomy. On the last day, they visited the aquarium on the Kemah Boardwalk where they touched and fed dozens of stingrays and a guitarfish.

"I loved learning more about the ecosystems from hands-on experience, and creating great memories along the way," said junior Elizabeth Motes. "My favorite part was catching the fish and feeding the sting rays."

Twenty-four lucky Lakehill Upper School students embarked on the trip of a lifetime this Spring Break, taking off to the Big Apple. On March 10, the students began their adventure with an early morning flight to New York and then headed to the W hotel in the heart of Times Square.

The group attended five fantastic Broadway shows and an opera at Lincoln Center: Hello Dolly, La BohemeCome from AwayOnce on this IslandCarousel, and Mean Girls. The students participated in two Broadway workshops, getting the chance to work with the dance captain for Come from Away, learning a musical number and a dance from the show, and a second with Christian Dante White, currently appearing as Cornelius in Hello Dolly, focusing on the life of a performer.

Students spent an afternoon touring Radio City Music Hall, getting an opportunity to stand onstage as well as talking with a member of the Rockettes. They had many opportunities to experience New York City culture, shopping at local shops, and trying the food at local delis and doughnut shops.

In their down time, students had the option to spend their time shopping in Soho, touring and shopping in the Strand bookstore with its 18 miles of books, or visiting the 9/11 Memorial. The group enjoyed a meal at the popular Ellen's Stardust Diner on Broadway, enjoying a live performance from the waiters as they ate, and a special performance of "New York, New York" by Mr. Herron. At their final dinner, the group was joined by three Lakehill alums: Charlotte AbateEmily Boles, and Kevin Lantz.

"The trip was exhilarating and exhausting," said chaperone Elizabeth Schmitt. "It was gratifying to see all of our group participate in the workshops. They got to experience such a great variety of live performances from opera to Broadway classics to brand new shows. It was wonderful watching them create lasting memories."

"The highlight of the trip for me was seeing Come from Away," said junior Anna Somodevilla. "The workshop on it was fun and energetic, but the show gave me a new perspective on what 9/11 was really like." Sophomore Lindsey Evans agreed. "The workshop gave me insights into all of the aspects of the creative process. I also taught my dad something about 9/11 that he did not know."
