For the second year, Taylor Lewis, Class of 2024, won the gold medal in dominating fashion at the TAPPS State Tennis Tournament. This spring, Taylor reflected on what those State Championships really mean to her and the school.

Taylor is an all-around student-athlete at Lakehill. She has played multiple sports and enjoys competing. Her love for tennis began when she was little. At the age of 12, she began her competitive tennis career. Outside of Lakehill, Taylor plays for Brookhaven Tennis Academy. She has been part of the tennis academy for a little over a year and a half and trains with Dave Anderson.

Last year, coaches and athletes alike were astounded by her abilities as she won match after match through the district tournament and on to the State Tournament. This season was highly anticipated.

“It is so much fun to be part of the team at Lakehill,” said Taylor beaming with pride. Taylor noted the joys of watching teammates compete on the court for the first time, playing athletes from so many different schools, and most importantly representing her school. “Ya know, I won for the school, not just for myself.”

“Taylor is one of those student-athletes who continually makes the athletic department proud,” said Jhoana Cayme-Mosley, Athletic Director. “Taylor not only competes on the court but also works hard in the classroom. She is one that our youngest Warriors can look up to.” When asked about advice for younger student-athletes, Taylor’s response was, “Don’t be afraid to lose. Losing is a learning experience.”

Every year, the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, or TAPPS, has an art competition for every private school in Texas. The competition was in Waco this year on April 11 and 12. Lakehill fine arts students competed in the categories of Drawing (black and white), Drawing (color), Computer Rendered Art, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Short Film, and Senior Portfolio. Each category had up to 50 submissions from every 3A private school in the TAPPS organization.  

Lakehill had 13 students place in every category. There were three state champions (gold medals), one bronze medal, and nine ribbons. Lakehill scored a total of 59 points, which was enough to place 3rd overall!

The first Lakehill women’s soccer season has just concluded under the direction of Head Coach Daniel Bracken. It will prove to be a fantastic foundation for a women’s program that was long overdue. The Warriors had an extremely strong beginning to the season that saw them go 5-0 and outscore our opponents 31-0. 

During this strong beginning stretch, the team lost right midfielder Bella Pumpelly for the season due to an injury. The fifth game was a 1-0 win over The Brook Hill School where Emma Bassman left the game due to injury. The Warriors were left to finish the game with only 10 players. The team was forced to play the next 2 games with only 10 players on the field. The first loss of the season came against the eventual district champion, Dallas Christian School. We bounced back with a win over All Saints, but one of our center midfielders, Avery Owen, got an injury that forced her to miss the next 4 games. Even though we were down to only 9 players at this point in the season, we beat Bishop Gorman 8-1 and 6-0 in the next 2 games. Esther Neerman and Kennedy Hall joined the team at this point and helped us beat The Brook Hill School for a second time. This win ensured that we would finish in at least second place in district play. Once again, the Warriors were bitten by the injury bug as Kennedy was unable to play our final district game against Dallas Christian School. The Warriors were back down to 10 players on the field. This epic battle vs Dallas Christian took all of the regulation and most of an overtime period to settle. In the end, the Warriors finished second in the district and secured a first-round bye in the playoffs. We were unable to get a playoff win, but we battled a very good McKinney Christian team.

Our Team was led by team captains and seniors Kayla Ristianto, Hannah Reister, Avery Owen, and Millie Castoldi. Ali Garst had 6 shutouts in 12 games and only allowed 6 goals all season. She also had nearly 30 saves in our final game and made Honorable Mention All-District as a goalkeeper in our district. Our defenders Hannah Reister, Georgia Robinson, Addie Ashford, Emma Bassman, and Esther Neerman are a huge part of those incredibly low goals against numbers as well. Hannah secured First Team All-District on defense. Georgia was Second Team All-District on defense and helped us get to overtime in the district tournament championship game by assisting on the tying goal. The Warriors’ midfield and strikers created and helped score 55 goals in 12 games. Avery made First Team All-District as a midfielder. She also scored 6 goals and had 4 assists in only 5 district games. Olivia Johnston made Second Team All-District as a midfielder and had 4 assists in district. The team averaged over 4.5 goals a game and outscored opponents by an average of 4 goals a game. That led to Millie making Honorable Mention All-District, Evan New earning Second Team All-District, and Maddie Reister and Kayla Ristianto earning First Team All-District on offense. Millie had 2 goals and 1 assist, Evan had 4 goals and 6 assists, Maddie had 6 goals and 7 assists, and Kayla had 20 goals and 5 assists in District play. Kayla was named the MVP of the district. 

Kayla, Hannah, Avery, Maddie, and Olivia also earned Academic All-State honors having made All-District First or Second Team and maintaining a 3.2 or higher GPA.

We will miss the leadership and example of seniors Kayla, Hannah, Avery, Millie, and Georgia set for us. We look forward to welcoming next year’s freshman class to the team. Coach Bracken is grateful for the exceptional players, parents, faculty, and staff that made this season so special.

The first Lakehill all boys soccer team recently concluded a successful season under the direction of Coach Thomas Cantu. The Warriors were led this season by seniors and returning starters Ellis Meyer and Sam Rosen. Ryan Motes, Maxwell Byrd, and Ethan Westerberg were also huge contributors as returners. Austin Rutherford, Brayden Neill, and Tommy Johnson worked their way into the starting lineup also making a huge impact throughout the season. With a young roster, several freshmen had the opportunity to step up and shine.

The Warriors’ season began with three non-district matchups before the holiday break. With a 2-1 record going into January, the Warriors kicked off district play on Thursday, January 5 against Dallas Lutheran with a hard fought matchup. Andrew Knipp began to shine early on and earned District Freshman of the Year by scoring five goals, two of which were headers. Kalyan Reedy, Grafton Robinson, Louis Descarpentries, and Maverick Kessler all stepped up in different ways to benefit the Warriors on the offensive and defensive sides.

The year of firsts seemed to be a theme for this first all boys soccer team. Ryan scored his first penalty kick. Maverick played his first soccer game. Austin started his first game and scored his first goal. Lastly, two games ended in penalty kicks, a first for the program.

This past Saturday, Lakehill's veteran robotics team, the Lakehill Bionicles (team #14904), competed at a Qualifier for North Texas. Competing against 32 teams, the Lakehill Bionicles won 3 out of their 5 matches and came in 14th place, providing their best field performance this season. Unfortunately, the team did not advance to Regionals but took home two awards (thus bringing the Bionicles's awards to four this season). The Lakehill Bionicles won the 2nd Place Design award - in recognition of their robot's 3D-printed mint-colored fins. These fins weren't only for aesthetic purposes, but also helped the robot line up to score during matches - an innovative element that no other team possessed. The team also won the 1st Place Think award for their detailed and thorough design process illustrated in the team's Engineering Portfolio (a document highlighting the team's journey throughout the season); as well as the mathematical formulas and stress tests used to analyze the robot.  

Throughout the year, the team has designed, built, and programmed one of the best robots the program has ever seen under the tutelage of head coach Mia Musselman and assistant coach Adam Jochelson. With the robot, the team competes in the FIRST Tech Challenge, a program that connects thousands of robotics programs from around the world. The team uses CAD (computer-automated design) to plan out their robot and print custom parts. Once assembled, programmers used a complicated control system called a PID loop to create a self-correcting drive. Builders and programmers worked together to fabricate parts that could be automated with sensors. The team put in hundreds of hours to make this all possible.

Outside of building a robot, the Lakehill Bionicles put hundreds of hours into outreach this season. The team has: mentored the rookie robotics team (the award-winning Lakehill Mononicles), volunteered as helpers at the Lower School robotics clubs, connected with professional mentors in STEM fields (from a NASA intern to Texas Instruments engineers to former Bionicles alumni), connected with other teams, assembled over 150 STEM projects kits for Lakehill's Lower School, provided over 150 meals for Vogel Alcove, and more!

Although the FIRST Competition season may have ended, the team is far from being done! The Lakehill Bionicles is excited to continue working on robotics skills in the coming months as we scrimmage with other teams, prepare for the TAPPS competition, and continue our outreach projects.

“I am absolutely astounded with what this team was able to produce this year. They have accomplished several coding feats we barely imagined in the past. This was due to an extreme amount of time and effort put into all aspects of the design,” said Head Coach Mia Musselman.

It was the summer of 1984 when Kaye Hauschild first walked into the doors of Lakehill Preparatory School. At the time, Lakehill was in need of a Latin teacher for Middle and Upper School students. When Ms. Hauschild walked out of the building that day as the new Latin teacher, she could not have known then what a vital role she would play in the history of the School and the impact she would have on the students.

Ms. Hauschild has a heart for service and students. She has always done what is best for students and has made sure they have had opportunities to learn in many different ways. From Mark Twain Day, to Middle School Adventure Week trips, to Middle School Fall Day Out, Ms. Hauschild made sure students had opportunities to grow socially and to create memories. Fairly quickly into her tenure as a teacher, she was named Middle School Coordinator because of her passion for planning parties, dances, and trips. Over the years, the Middle School Division Head position evolved and there was no doubt that Ms. Hauschild was the one at the helm.

“Kaye Hauschild is an exceptional school administrator,” said Roger Perry, Lakehill’s Headmaster from 1983 to 2021. “I have been blessed to work with her for most of her career and can honestly say that Kaye has been a guiding light, encourager, and enhancer of the lives of thousands of children during her service as Middle School Head at Lakehill. Her success can be measured by all of the lives of middle school students she has helped manage and navigate through those challenging and exciting years of development at our school. Kaye has my admiration and appreciation for always giving one hundred percent of herself for the benefit of others. All of us who have been with her on this journey are better because of our time together. Kaye is a 'one of a kind' and has always gone the extra mile and has given more of herself to Lakehill than was ever asked or expected. I join a host of others who are glad she has made Lakehill her home.”

As Ms. Hauschild sat in the cafeteria on Wednesday during Middle School lunches, she tearfully smiled and said, “Creating an environment for children to grow into who they are meant to be and to have opportunities to try new things…what is better than that. You know, when you think back to 1984, it is hard to nail down specific memories. Lakehill is an exceptional place for children to grow, including my own. It has been an honor to serve in this capacity for all these years.” 

As the 2023-2024 academic year is on the horizon, Ms. Hauschild has decided to step out of her role as Middle School Division Head and teach full time in the Middle School beginning next fall. “As Kaye moves into a different form of leadership in the Middle School, it is clear that her character is the gold standard,” said the current Head of School, Art Hall. “Quietly and boldly, she has shaped the Middle School with more actions than words. Kaye’s character is to assist without question, motivate with kindness, and cheer for others until it is her turn; Ms. Kaye Hauschild, it is your turn to hear the applause!"

Ms. Hauschild, thank you for everything you have done for Lakehill and for making this home. Thank you for always putting the students first and treating them as if they were your own.

Varsity Girls Basketball

The Lakehill Varsity girls basketball season has come to an end. Unfortunately, their season was cut short due to player injuries and the inability to field enough players for a team. While the odds were against them, they still fought hard to have fun and show up ready to fight. There were some classic battles and memories made by the Lakehill girls that included the following:

  • Esther Neerman’s game winning shot with 3 seconds against Lucas Christian at home.  
  • Cece Degeyter’s breakout game against Denton Calvary scoring 18 points in the holiday tournament.
  • Alexa Kennedy’s career double-double game scoring 10 points and 18 rebounds at Akiba-Yavneh on her birthday.
  • Sarah Ganson had the best game of her career at Lakehill against the district champion McKinney Cornerstone.  

Some of the fun and classic moments of the season were:

  • Taylor Allen ran around in circles against Lutheran after Esther fouled out of the game. I don’t think I have ever seen a player run from one side to the other two times within 5 seconds.
  • Kaya Gore, shocking herself, scored a three-pointer off the backboard against McKinney Christian.
  • Morgan Lee lifted two Lucas Christian players off the ground as they were all going for the loose ball that she was picking up.
  • Miyu Nagumo forgot her shoes and asked Coach Samantha to pick them up. I am not sure who was more stressed, Coach Sam or Miyu.
  • Sierra Salazar rode the bus home from Trinity Christian Academy and explained how well she knows Miyu. 

While the season didn’t get the desired results, the Warriors secured two representatives on the All-District Teams. Taylor Allen was selected to 2nd Team All-District and Alexa Kennedy received Honorable Mention All-District.  

This offseason, we plan on working hard to achieve our goal of finishing in the top three in the district next season. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Lakehill Warriors Varsity girls program. We look forward to a new and improved version of the women’s basketball program next season.

Varsity Boys Basketball

The Lakehill Boys basketball season came to an end last week, culminating in an exciting district win to end the season. It was a season of change and growth for the Warriors who lost two projected starters to injury before the season began and lost another starter to injury early in the season. The injuries to multiple positions and the lack of a senior class on the basketball team led to a lot of playing time for younger players being forced to step up and take on a bigger role than expected. Overall, the Warriors had 5 freshmen that averaged over 10 minutes a game, and 10 players overall averaging more than 10 minutes. Freshman guard Kegan Thompson said, “It was an exciting season, it was cool to see so many freshman playing varsity minutes and starting games, I really think it’s going to help us a lot in the future.”

The season started out great with 3 wins in a row. Right from the start everyone could tell it was going to be a special season for sophomore point guard Drew Perry, who scored 32 points in his first game and never looked back. Racking up accolades including earning Mr. Texas Basketball Player of the week in the third week of the season. Drew said, “I just wanted to do what was best for the team. We needed someone to score so I filled that role. We needed someone to rebound and play defense so I tried to do that as well. At the end of the day, I just want to win and see the program have success. Personal achievement is never the goal - I’m just glad I got to help the team” 

As the season went on, the Warrior's youth began to show and they faced some challenges as the competition started to improve and the quality of opponents increased. The Warriors battled all year. Despite being outmatched in several games, they managed to scrape together a 10-win season, including 5 district wins to finish the season with a record of 10-17. “I’m proud of the way my guys fought,” said head coach Bradley Neyland, “We weren’t always the better team, we had our fair share of defeats, but they never gave up. When the best players and leaders of your team are diving on the floor for loose balls and taking charges even when losing by double digits, it’s contagious and that attitude spreads to the whole team. My message all season has been to show constant effort, constant focus, and constant commitment. This group is so young and talented, and if they keep those three things a priority, the winning is sure to come.”

Drew ended up leading the Warriors in almost every major category, scoring (20.9ppg), rebounding (5.7), and assists (2.4), but he wasn’t the only player that had a good season. Freshman Kegan Thompson and Ian Johnston stepped up into unexpected starting roles and took the challenge on with enthusiasm and intensity. Juniors Austin Boothe, Brendan Hall, and Jordan Vicente were put into leadership roles with no seniors. They were pushed harder than normal and all three responded in an incredible way. Sophomore Skylar Lambert started, came off the bench, had multiple roles, and embraced them all. So many freshmen who expected to be JV-only players this year found themselves playing huge roles on Varsity. Mercer Palamar, Luke Widhalm, Noah Kurian, and Jason Dickerson, all stepped up. Connor Sullivan embraced his job as an emotional leader, keeping the bench involved and bringing energy to every moment. Jack Widhalm, although injured for the entire season and unable to play, got involved in the program, sat on the bench, supported the team, and provided a lift for all the guys. “I really wanted to be out there playing ball with my team, it was hard to sit and watch but I knew that was what I could do to help my teammates and make us better. I can’t wait to suit up and play again next year," said Jack.

"It was a great season of experience for the Warriors as they now look ahead to off-season workouts and ways to improve for the 2023-2024 season. This is the first year as a coach that my entire team is coming back and we will get to add back all the injured players and the rising 8th graders. Next year is going to be fun," said Coach Neyland.

The season came to a close on Saturday at the FTC North Texas Semi-Regional Tournament for Lakehill’s rookie robotics team, The Mononicles. The first-year roboticists did not advance to the Regional Championships on Feb 25th. But they did place well in the merit award, presented by the judges to teams they feel demonstrate exemplary performance in competition-related characteristics. Lakehill’s rookies came in second of 31 teams for the Design Award, a testament to their sleek and original design, with coordinated dragon-themed elements throughout the robot. They also took home the top prize in the Connect Award competition, likely due to their success in reaching other FTC teams around the world through their Instagram and TikTok (@ftc22191) posts. It’s the first trophy for the Mononicles in the competition this year. 

“It’s been a great year for the students on this new team at our school,” said Lakehill’s Assistant Coach Adam Jochelson. “They should be really proud of all they’ve accomplished in their first attempt at robotics. They established a solid foundation to build upon for next season.” The team consisted of 12 students, none of whom had worked on robots before. They came together to design, build, and code a robot to compete against other schools, hoping to advance as far as they could in the First Tech Challenge. Though their competition season has come to an end, the Mononicles will continue to work on robotics challenges for the rest of the school year, honing their skills for next year.
