For more than 40 years, Lakehill Preparatory School has been opening its doors to elderly members of the Dallas community for the much beloved tradition of the Holiday Luncheon. I have enjoyed participating in this tradition as an Upper School student for the past four years.
Each grade has progressively more complex responsibilities. Freshman entertain the guests over coffee and cookies after they have had their meal.
Sophomores have the important job of taking and delivering the guests’ photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus placed into a hand-decorated frame. This provides each guest with a special souvenir from the luncheon.
Junior year features the class in traditional reindeer and elf costumes, the parade for Lower School with special guest appearances from none other than Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and the coveted Reindeer Games.
As seniors, the class shops for the food, decorates the cafeteria, serves the guests, and cleans up after the event. Senior parents help prepare the turkeys for the luncheon. This year, there were a record-breaking 209 guests.
From easing into the Luncheon our freshman year, to running it our senior year, the Holiday Luncheon has been a staple in my experience at Lakehill. Each year, seeing familiar faces, making lasting connections with the guests, bonding with friends over shared experiences, are highlights of mine and so many other Lakehill students' experiences.
