Lakehill Celebrates International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") is observed around the world each year on September 21. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution 36/37, the General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to"commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples."

Lakehill Upper School teacher Latricia Davis was selected this summer as a USI Peace Teacher by the United States Institute of Peace. She is one of only four teachers in the entire country selected for this honor. Through her involvement in the year-long teacher cohort program, Davis will discover new ways to teach her students about conflict and peace and to engage them in peace-building action. Teachers and their students also actively participate in Peace Day.

To celebrate Peace Day in her Upper School Social Studies classes, Davis developed engaging activities for each group. Students in AP US History created peace signs and defined what peace means to them in order to observe how one's understanding of peace changes over time. Ninth graders discussed what peace means and began creating a video on how they can become peace-builders in their school. Peace movements were the topic of discussion in AP Human Geography as students discussed what they could do at their age and staged their own peace walk.

"I hope that through participating in the cohort, I will not only learn about how to teach peace, but will inspire our students to become peace-builders within our school and community," said Davis.
