The Imaging Center on Lovers Lane, a department of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – White Rock, offers three-dimensional (3D) digital mammography in addition to the traditional 2D method.
According to studies reported by The Journal of the American Medical Association, 3D mammography has shown to decrease the number of false-positive results, as well as the need for recall testing, both of which alleviate the stress involved in breast cancer screening.
What is 3D Mammography?
- 3D mammography is performed in conjunction with a 2D digital mammogram to create a more complete picture of breast health.
- During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images.
- A computer then uses these images to produce a layered 3D image of the breast tissue.
- This provides greater detail and allows the radiologist to see “inside” the breast layer by layer designed to find cancers earlier than ever.
Benefits of 3D mammography include:
- May reduce false alarms, especially in cases of women with dense breast tissue

- Fewer repeat images may be needed, reducing the exposure to radiation
- Improved breast cancer detection by 27 to 50 percent over 2D mammography
