If you’re tired of ho-hum peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, not looking forward to having last night’s leftovers, or would rather skip lunch all together instead of eating a low calorie, no taste microwavable entrée, then it’s time to banish boredom with a healthy lunch. Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake is excited to be the official wellness partner of YMCA at White Rock and offer Healthy Eating for Healthy Living, a series of free nutrition classes for the east Dallas area.

During our next class on Saturday, March 22 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., a registered dietitian will give tips about creativity and planning so an exciting lunch can be just a few easy steps away. The free class will be held at YMCA at White Rock, 7324 Gaston Avenue. Healthy snacks will be served. Space is limited and reservations are required. To register, call 877-647-1109.

To get started with more interesting meals, try these simple tips and recipes to help boost your creativity in the kitchen:

  • Give your sandwich a makeover by piling your favorite fixings on a better bread option, such as focaccia or whole wheat pita. Try waffles for a sweet and savory treat.
  • Lose the calories, but keep the taste of your favorite BLT by using new Hidden Valley Bacon Ranch sandwich spread instead of mayo — you’ll get all the same flavor with a third of the calories.
  • Make extra meat and vegetables for dinner, and use them for tomorrow's lunch by placing leftovers between two pieces of your favorite bread.
  • Add interest to turkey sandwiches with walnuts, avocado or apple slices to jazz up a childhood favorite.
  • For the perfect Meatless Monday, try a sandwich on whole wheat bread with slices of avocado and tomato, topped with your favorite cheese — an instant vegetarian masterpiece.
