Tour des Fleur Photo Credit: Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden

Todd Howard, th+a architects president and Dallas Arboretum board member, has been appointed chairman of the 2014 Tour des Fleur, a 10K and 20K race benefitting the Dallas Arboretum. Assisting him will be Logan Burgess who coordinates race mechanics and participation.

An East Dallas resident, Howard has been active in the Dallas community for many years including a former board member of Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. A former president of the board of the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, he created the Emerging Leaders Program, which later received a national AIA award. He is also the former president of the Dallas Architectural Foundation and is active with the Texas Society of Architects.

Having organized the staff effort for Tour des Fleurs since the race’s beginning days eight years ago is Park Cities resident Karen Reardon. This year, she is literally hanging up her tennis shoes and passing the baton to staff newcomer Dana Murrell who is in charge of the garden’s public events. Reardon, who is special projects director and the Hoffman Family Gift Store buyer, will still continue to work at the Arboretum in the latter roles.

“Eight years ago, Dallas Arboretum President Mary Brinegar asked me to coordinate the promotion, printing, budgeting, in-kind donations, volunteers, etc. for this new run, which benefits the Arboretum’s programs,” said Reardon. “I’ve been doing this for so long, but it’s now time for me to pass the baton to Dana because with recent stress fractures in my legs, I must be temporarily off my feet.”

Those who have ever attended a member’s event at the Dallas Arboretum, such as the Easter Egg Hunt, Goblins in the Garden, the Caroline Rose Hunt Society Dinners or a Friends of the Arboretum Dinner, have probably seen Karen Reardon hard at work making sure everything would run like clockwork. But her days of running the Tour des Fleurs are coming to an end.

Tour des Fleurs has become a tradition for more than 2,800 runners, and registration is now open for the September event. This year’s 9th annual Tour des Fleurs, presented by Dave Perry-Miller & Associates, is Saturday, September 20, and the race starts and ends at the Dallas Arboretum, 8617 Garland Road.

The race also kicks off the opening of Autumn at the Arboretum, which features the nationally acclaimed Pumpkin Village featuring houses created out of 50,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash along with Cinderella’s carriage and storybook houses.

This 10/20K race around the beautiful White Rock Lake starts at 7:00 a.m. and is followed by a post-race celebration with food and beverages at the Dallas Arboretum’s Martin Rutchik Concert Stage and Lawn overlooking the picturesque White Rock Lake. The after-party band is the Good Times Van Band. Visit http://tourdesfleurs.org/ for more details, including registration.

Reardon is also staying off her feet because that’s what the doctor ordered. Her husband, Dr. Will Reardon, who is a cardiologist, will be sure she complies so that she can continue working at the garden. Karen and Will have two grown children, Mollie and John. Mollie is a NICU nurse in Austin, and John owns Deep Ellum Brewery.

“Fall is our most colorful time of year,” said Dave Forehand, vice president of gardens, “Many of the summer flowers like zinnias, impatiens, salvia and coleus respond to cooler nights with blazing bursts of color. Our thousands of pumpkins bring out the color in banks of chrysanthemums that are layered with ornamental grasses, copper plants and firebush.”

Amegy Bank of Texas Helps Dallas Arboretum

Bringto Dallas its Newest Holiday Tradition

The 12 Days of Christmas

Tickets on sale on August 15 for an unveiling November 16

DALLAS, Texas, Holiday 2014 – The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden announces today the creation of a $1.6 million exhibition entitled The 12 Days of Christmas. Unique in the world, the exhibit will open on the botanical garden grounds on November 16 and run through January 4, 2015. Dramatically designed 15-foot-tall gazebos have been made for each day of the popular carol and include either life-size Victorian-costumed mannequins or whimsical animals, with music accompanying each gazebo. The Arboretum selected the same team that creates many of the elaborate sets and intricate costumes for The Dallas Opera productions to design and build this holiday exhibition.

"Every dress, hat and costume has lavish attention to detail that is amazing. This extraordinary creation is over the top," said Brian Shivers, Dallas Arboretum board chairman. "Some exhibits have mechanical animation that brings the story to life, such as watching nine ladies swirling and dancing in one gazebo or finding 10 Lords-a-Leaping through the air in another. Each gazebo is encased in glass to both protect it from the elements and to lend an almost 'music box' quality to the exhibition."

"It is just magical and will be a delight to share with friends and families. We look forward to the joy this gorgeous holiday installation will bring to our garden guests," stated Dallas Arboretum President Mary Brinegar.

Building upon the audience appeal of the Chihuly installation, which the Arboretum showcased three years ago, and the infrastructure of outdoor lighting that was created in the garden for it, the Arboretum has conceived and commissioned this gift to the city with support from Amegy Bank of Texas and some of the garden's major donors. Two years in the making, the idea originated with a board member's wife who knew the garden wanted a holiday exhibit for families that could be beautiful and dramatic by day and sparkling when lit at night.

Kirk Wiginton, President & CEO, Amegy Bank of Texas, Dallas Region, said, "Amegy Bank of Texas is honored to present The 12 Days of Christmas, Dallas' newest tradition at the Dallas Arboretum. Not only will it benefit our community both culturally and economically, but it will become a new holiday exhibit that will attract even more visitors to this beautiful garden."

Tickets go on sale August 15. There will be a significant discount available until September 1 for those wanting to take advantage of the early bird pricing.  Reservation dates may be selected at any time after purchase but will be subject to availability. Individual evening tickets include parking, and more information can be found at http://www.dallasarboretum.org/. For inquiries regarding discounted tickets for groups 15 or larger, contact groupsales@dallasarboretum.org or 214-515-6520.

Shivers said, "Like the Chihuly exhibit, The 12 Days of Christmas exhibit will attract visitors during the day and evening to see the handiwork and creativity that people have come to expect of the Dallas Arboretum. We want to thank Tom and Phyllis McCasland for having the vision of this exhibit. We also want to give proper thanks to Tommy Bourgeois, The Dallas Opera production designer, for helping us create the intricately designed costumes and décor—almost all locally sourced in Texas—and Greg Blackburn and his team at Dallas Stage Scenery who built the structures."

In addition to the exhibit, guests are invited during the day to visit the DeGolyer Estate. This year, the house will be decorated top to bottom with a collection of Byers' Choice Ltd. Christmas Caroler figurines that were collected throughout the United States and beyond. They are treasured for their simple beauty and on display as they carry out the Victorian theme present in the garden. This significant private collection was generously donated for display at the Arboretum by Kim and John Semyan.

Dallas Arboretum Hosts “Nature Thru the Lens” Early Morning Photo Stroll

Children and family invited to other Year of the Children’s Garden events this summer

Early yesterday morning, about 40 students and parents participated in the “Nature Thru the Lens” early morning photo stroll. The stroll was free and open to all students entering grades 6 to 12. This event is one of the events celebrating the inaugural Year of the Children’s Garden.

Marc Barta, an enthusiastic photographer, led the photo stroll. He told the participants, “Early morning is the best time to take photos because it is before the sun is high in the sky. Evening right before the sun sets is also a magical time with great natural light.” He told them to be creative with both close-up shots and panoramic views.

The students have the option of submitting their work to the Student Photo Contest and Exhibition in Rosine Hall on September 14, from 3-5 p.m. The top four student photographers will get to have a conversation with nature photographer David Gibson in his studio. David Gibson is world-renown and has his art is shown in galleries in Europe, Asia, and the Unites States and is a favorite of collectors. He will have a limited exhibition of his work at the Arboretum in celebration of the student exhibit.

As a special treat, internationally celebrated nature photographer David Gibson, whose work is exhibited in museums and galleries in Europe, Asia and the United States and is a favorite of collectors, will invite the top four winners for a conversation about photography in his studio. He has also consented for us to have a limited exhibition of his work at the Arboretum in celebration of the student exhibit.
