Living in Texas, we see our fair share of inclement weather throughout the seasons. Hailstorms are all too common and can unfortunately leave behind a heavy price tag for repairs. According to ehow.com, insurance.com states that auto claims resulting from hailstorm damage can range from $2,000 to $3,000! Having to pay out that kind of unexpected expense can be frustrating, especially when it has the potential to happen repeatedly. With an increase in severe weather patterns of late, avoiding this peril is the answer.

During the 1950s, many homes in Dallas were built with poor quality, unattached garages. Over time, these substandard structures have become hazardous for storing anything, much less a car.

"People prefer larger attached garages for convenience,” Christian LeLash, Associate with Dave Perry-Miller, said. “In older homes, some two-car garages are essentially one-car garages. For a lot of people, it’s a deal killer to have a small garage.”

Clients who are looking to convert these garages into something that will enhance their homes routinely approach us. The reasons are many: protection from the elements, safety instead parking a car on the street overnight, creating a functional workspace or even building a "man cave."

“The garage is one of the most important aspects when purchasing a home — it's right up there with master bedroom size and kitchen layout,” LeLash said.

In recent years, we have had the privilege of transforming some dreary, dusty and neglected garages into usable, enjoyable space. We’ve worked with clients to explore design and construction possibilities and help them understand the conversion process, from planning to budgeting to completion.

There are many benefits to a garage renovation:

  • Increase square footage, storage space and/or livable space
  • Safety and security for your car and for you when leaving/entering your home
  • Protection from the elements
  • Additional room for a workshop, studio, apartment, recreation area, teen hangout

The possibilities are endless, and we value the role we play in helping clients transform their often-neglected garage into a room that is safe, organized and functional.
