A kitchen should be warm and inviting to family and friends—is yours?

During the holidays, a great amount of time is spent in the kitchen, preparing meals for the entire family to share.  While the kids play around the house, the adults gather in the kitchen to cook, catch up and celebrate the season.

The holidays often present an ideal picture of family and friends, but does your perfect holiday vision match your surroundings?

Maybe you’ve outgrown your kitchen, due to the welcome issue of a growing family. Or, maybe you’ve spent a lot of holiday seasons in your current kitchen and are looking for an update.

If you’re interested in remodeling your kitchen, the holidays are a perfect time to gather information for remodeling plans.  With extra people and food in the house, you’ll have an opportunity to see where a little additional space or storage could be utilized in the future.

Do you need more counter space for food prep?  Could you use more seating room for extended family?  Whatever your reasons for remodeling, throughout the holidays, take note of what you’d like to change during a remodel.

When considering a kitchen remodel, keep the following tips in mind:

Plan ahead of time.
Spend plenty of time in advance planning your kitchen remodel, so you won’t be tempted to change your mind during construction.  Change orders can extend the completion date and lead to inflated construction costs.

Be conscious of quality.
Rather than chasing low-quality bargains, seek out durable, high-end supplies that will last for a long time with little maintenance.

Add storage if you don’t have space.
If expanding the size of your kitchen isn’t an option during a remodel, add storage instead.  To make the most of limited space, install cabinets that reach the ceiling for extra storage room for those once-a-year items such as holiday table settings.  Also, hang a rack from the ceiling for pots and pans, and mount shelves or hooks to the backs of closet doors for cleaning supplies and other small items.
