Lady Friars fall behind early, can't finish rally in season opener

Tuesday's season opener was a much-anticipated matchup pitting the top-ranked Bishop Lynch Lady Friars from TAPPS 6A against the eighth-ranked McKinney Boyd Broncos from UIL 6A.

Four highly competitive sets later, it was the visiting Broncos (2-0) emerging victorious, topping a Bishop Lynch team working in a handful of new varsity team members.

Boyd won by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 10-25 and 25-19, capitalizing on several unforced errors by the Lady Friars (0-1).

Madi Tyus led the offensive attack with a team-high 13 kills to go with five digs. Morgan Hinds had 19 digs and Melanie Heigele notched 29 assists with five digs.

Other key contributors include Hannah Puddy (nine kills), Hannah Osborn (seven digs) and Izzy Clavenna (11 kills).

The Lady Friars won't have much time to reflect on the loss as they head to Pearland to compete in the prestigious Adidas Texas Invitational, the largest high school volleyball tournament in the country involving many of Texas' top teams.

Bishop Lynch will open pool play Thursday with an 11:30 a.m. match against Peaster, followed by a 12:45 p.m. meeting with San Antonio O'Connor and a 2 p.m. contest against Santa Fe (NM) and.

Peaster is ranked No. 2 in UIL's Class 3A while O'Connor is No. 10 in UIL Class 6A. The Lady Friars are seeded No. 19 out of 80 teams in this weekend's tournament.

The BL subvarsity teams swept Boyd on Tuesday, starting with the junior varsity winning 2-1 (25-23, 22-25, 26-24) in a very competitive match.

The sophomore team earned a 2-1 win with scores of 25-16, 10-25 and 25-23. The freshmen swept Boyd 2-0 with scores of 25-22, 25-7.
