The Lady Friar soccer clubs got mixed results Wednesday against rival Ursuline, as the junior varsity emerged victorious, but the varsity tasted bitter defeat.
The senior squad lost a 4-0 decision in a tough, physical match against the Bears, but fell on the short end despite battling hard with leadership by senior captains Atu Mshana, Katelyn Curtis and Mica MacKay.
Ursuline got on the board first, putting in a free kick from about 40 yards for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Friars tried to get level, but just missed on a few chances before deflecting an Ursuline shot into the net for an own-goal and a 2-0 UA lead.
Mshana fired several shots in the second half, trying to bring BL back into the match, but Ursuline added two late goals to cement the win.
The junior varsity won its opener, notching a 1-0 shutout of the Bears — the first time in two years the Lady Friar JV has defeated Ursuline.
Sophomore Shannon Chester scored the game-winner off an assist from freshman Andrea Marentes. Freshman Madison White earned the clean sheet in her debut for BL.
Both teams will return to the pitch Monday at John Paul II. The JV will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at around 7 p.m.
