Friars' big-play defense carries BL to victory

For the second straight week, the Friar defense forced five turnovers and this time, they needed each one to put away Kaufman for a 28-14 win at Roffino Stadium in the final non-district game of the season.

Bishop Lynch (2-1) had a hard time getting its offense going with just 235 yards, but offset that number with a pair of defensive scores to get past the visiting Lions (1-2).

Jeremy Irving picked off two passes, the first of which came near the end of the first half and gave the Friars a two-score lead at the break.

Kaufman had a chance to go down and tie the game with just a couple of minutes left, but again the defense stepped up in the biggest way as Daniel Packard took an interception 25 yards to the house, helping the Friars go into the bye week on a two-game win streak.

Jermaine Mask led the team with 79 rushing yards and got the Friars on the board first with a three-yard run. The Lions hit one of their two big plays to tie the game with a 72-yard pass in the second quarter.

Jaire Moore scored from nine yards to regain the lead and Irving's return gave the Friars a buffer heading into the break.

In the third, Kaufman hit its second big play, scoring on a 79-yard pass. But the Lions weren't able to strike gold a third time. Instead, Packard iced the game with his touchdown return.

Packard had 12 tackles and forced a fumble in addition to his interception. Irving was in on 10 tackles and also recovered a fumble to go with his two interceptions. Landry Kershaw forced a fumble and was in on 20 tackles.

The Friars will have two weeks to prepare for their district opener on Sept. 23 at Earl Hayes Stadium, on the Bishop Dunne campus.
