SUMMARY:Paddle With Purpose: Meet Dallas United PINK
DESCRIPTION:Paddle with Purpose \n Meet Dallas United PINK \n   \n Saturday
 \, April 2nd @ 11:00am—Noon           \n Ridgewood Park UMC \n 6445 E. Lov
 ers Lane\, Dallas\, TX \n Contact: PinkInfo@DallasUnitedCrew.org \n   \nIf
you have been around White Rock Lake on a Saturday morning\, you may have
seen a group of women\, paddling in unison on a 40 foot long boat to the
rhythmic beat of a drummer who is perched on the bow.  Meet Dallas United
PINK — the area’s first Breast Cancer Survivors’ Dragon Boat Team. If you
are a breast cancer survivor seeking an exceptional opportunity to join a
community of women who understand the journey\, value the benefits of exe
rcise\, bond over brunch\, and love to compete — Dallas United PINK is for
YOU! \nThe ancient sport of dragon boating began in China over 2\,000 yea
rs ago. The discovery of its benefits for breast cancer survivors\, howeve
r\, has been much more recent. In 1996\, a sports medicine physician\, Dr.
Don McKenzie from the University of British Columbia\, discovered the ben
efits of paddling for overall health following cancer treatments\, and tha
t it actually helped women avoid lymphedema (a common side-effect). Since
the formation of the first team in Canada\, the International Breast Canc
er Paddler’s Commission (IBCPC) now has over 250 registered teams worldwid
e\, including Dallas United PINK. \nWhy do we paddle? It’s an effective\,
full-body workout combining range of motion\, muscle strength and cardio.
However\, the benefits go beyond the physical.  The camaraderie that dev
elops between teammates — most of whom began as strangers — often proves m
ore valuable than the calories burned or muscles toned. With each race\, e
ach practice\, each drum beat\, we become stronger as individuals and as a
team. \nWhere do we paddle? We paddle on White Rock Lake in Dallas on Sat
urday mornings from March thru October.  We also participate in a number o
f festivals against other Breast Cancer Survivor Teams in places like Irvi
 ng\, Sugarland\, Texarkana\, Oklahoma City\, and even New Zealand! That’s
right — the 2023 IBCPC festival will be held in Lake Karapiro\, New Zeala
nd and Dallas United PINK will be competing.     \nWe invite you to join u
s for an informational meeting if you would like more details. There is ab
solutely no experience necessary. You do not have to be an athlete to beco
me a skilled dragon boater. Our team features women from 40-70+\, some of
whom are 20 year survivors and some still in active treatment. There is a
seat for everyone on our boat! Paddles Up!\nRidgewood Park United Methodi
