It's time again for the annual Ebby White Rock/Lake Highlands "Spring Clean Thing" at the North Lake Shopping Center on Saturday, April 21. There will be a mobile shredder truck on site, as well as a Goodwill Donation Drive going on. It's a good opportunity to help others as you help yourself.

There will be a Cintas shredder truck on site from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Protect yourself from identity theft and securely destroy those old bank statements, tax returns and other sensitive papers on site. There's even no need to remove paper clips or staples; just bring them by the box full (no binders or hard drives, please). Look for the big truck in the parking lot.

As mentioned, there will also be a Goodwill Donation Drive ongoing at the same time. Please clean out your closets, cabinets and garages and bring those donations. Your donations help Goodwill provide jobs and training to people with disabilities and disadvantaging conditions in our community. Receipts will be available from the attendant on duty. Items to donate include clothes, shoes, games & toys, small sports equipment, small appliances, books, DVDs, computers & accessories, housewares, jewelry & accessories, purses and backpacks.

This event is compliments of Ebby Halliday Realtors.

The residents of Dallas are very protective of their parks, trails and outdoor spaces. In a city dominated by steel and concrete, nature is a very precious resource and one that has to be cared for. The Santa Fe Trail is one such resource, and the Friends of the Santa Fe Trail are asking for volunteers to come out for a trail clean-up.

The clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, April 28. It's a good opportunity to reconnect with neighbors and friends throughout the community, as well as getting a breath of fresh air. To learn more or to get updates about the clean-up, check out the Friends of the Santa Fe Trail.

Also, don't forget to check out and sign up for the Santa Fe 5K in the middle of October. More information can be found on the trail website.

As children, many girls dream of being princesses while boys imagine themselves as gallant knights. And for one day, kids can fulfill their fantasies at the SMU Meadows Museum during Family Fun Day. As part of the exhibition "The Invention of Glory: Afonoso V and the Pastrana Tapestries," families will be transported back to the medieval times.

The Family Fun Day is taking place on Saturday, April 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Families will feel like they really have gone back in time, as there will be troubadours, jesters and dancers (all portrayed by SMU arts students) milling around outside, as well as a display of jousting from acting students. There will even be falconers on hands from American Hawking.

Inside the museum, children will have the opportunity to create knight and princess crafts, search for arts treasures in a scavenger hunt and take an exciting, hands-on look at real armor that is used by contemporary sword-fighters with Schola St. George Medieval and Renaissance Swordsmanship.

And since this event is happening during lunch, princesses and knights get free treats. Ruthie's Rolling Cafe and Green House food trucks will also be on hand at the event to serve food.

For those that like a large selection when choosing their beverage of choice, they're in luck. Total Wine & More has announced that they will be opening their first store in the state of Texas, and they've chosen Dallas as their entry city. Aside from its wine, the retailer will also offer a large selection of spirits, beers and cigars. "We feature wine from nearly every wine-growing region in the world, as well as a tremendous selection of spirits from every price range, and a diverse offering of beers, from America's most popular beers to hard-to-find microbrews and imports. I believe Dallas residents will be surprised and amazed when they first enter our store."

The store is scheduled to open in early summer with additional details about the store design and its offerings coming shortly before its opening. The store is also in the process of hiring its Dallas team members.

With several accidents, incidents and crimes occurring on trains and train platforms in past few months, it's understandable that frequent DART passengers are worried for their safety. So, beginning Friday, April 6, passengers can now text the DART police if there is an emergency aboard a train.

Riders will be able to connect to DART Police via text messaging by sending a short message with the keyword "dartpolice" to 41411. However, DART Police are quick to point out that this new tool is not a replacement for emergency calls.

Instead, they're for transit customers that are either hearing impaired, do not wish to make a phone call or something else that makes them uncomfortable while on the DART.

DART Police also believe that this new texting tool will be more popular with younger adult and teenage customers that prefer texting over talking.

White Rock Lake is a beautiful slice of nature in the heart of Dallas but very few people can actually claim to have been on the lake itself. Dallas United Crew is offering that opportunity, in the form of rowing, to students between sixth and 12th grade.

Any interested students should come out to White Rock Lake on Saturday, April 28 for "Cruise the Lake" with Dallas United Crew (DUC). DUC will show the students what rowing is all about, as well as giving a tour of their racing shells and a meet and greet with the coaching staff and team.

Students will get the chance to learn and try out the rowing machines that the team uses and will even get to row in an eight person boat with several varsity rowers. This entire event is free for all and even includes lunch. DUC just asks that students sign up for one of the one-hour time slots:

  • 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
  • 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
  • 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

To learn more or to sign up for a time slot, visit the Dallas United Crew website.
