Little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. Little boys are made of frogs and snails and puppy dogs tails. Even from the start, little boys and little girls are different. As we grow into adults those differences continue, including how our bodies react to a heart attack.

Heart attack symptoms displayed by men and women are considerably different. When a woman has a heart attack she may experience nausea, overwhelming fatigue and dizziness. Her warning signs of an impending heart attack could include shortness of breath, vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is especially true for women and heart disease. Admittedly, some heart disease risk factors are beyond our control, such as family history and age. After menopause, a woman’s chance of developing heart disease soars because her body’s production of estrogen drops. But you can take an active role in preventing cardiovascular disease by managing your risk factors.

  • Don’t smoke.
  • Lower your cholesterol.
  • Maintain a normal weight.
  • Exercise.
  • Manage your diabetes, if you have the condition.

Having just one of the risk factors for heart disease can be dangerous. But having multiple risks is even more serious because risk factors tend to intensify the effects of others and increase your chances of developing a heart condition. To learn more about your risk for developing heart disease, take the free, online Heart Quiz for Women at www.DoctorsHospitalDallas.com/HeartQuizforWomen.

In honor of National Go Red for Women Day, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake is offering free red dress lapel pins to help raise awareness of women and heart disease. Call 866-764-3627 for your free pin today.

All across the United State, the rate of crime has continued to drop. And in our city of Dallas, the crime rate has gone down for the eighth consecutive year. This is exactly the opposite of what experts predicted - the expectation, especially in a recession, was that crime would increase.

The overall amount of crime in Dallas decreased by 4-percent in 2011 and the number of murder cases dropped from 148 to 133, which is the lowest number of murder cases in over 40 years. In total, violent crime has gone down by about 9-percent, which actually marks the 10th straight year of violent crime reduction.

Crime in just about every category has gone down:

  • Robberies dropped by 9-percent
  • Rapes dropped by 16-percent
  • Aggravated assault dropped by 7-percent
  • Burglary dropped by 4-percent
  • Theft dropped by 3-percent

As for why crime in Dallas has kept decreasing, police credit an increase in staffing, improved technology and summer crime initiatives among other reasons. Whatever the reason, residents of Dallas can sleep a little easier at night.

The choices you make today will impact your life tomorrow. This may sound like advice a mother gives her children, but it is especially true when it comes to taking care of your heart. While some risk factors for developing heart disease are beyond our control, such as age, race or family history, certain lifestyle choices we make in our 20s, 30s and 40s will definitely impact the quality of life in our 50s, 60s and 70s.

Heart disease – and heart attack – is not just for men. It’s the number one cause of death in women over the age of 25 and kills nearly twice as many American women than all types of cancer, including breast cancer.

Fortunately, you can take steps now to prevent heart disease and enjoy a healthier life in the years to come by:

  • Not smoking.
  • Exercising regularly.
  • Eating a nutritious diet.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight.

You also can attend a free, baseline heart screening for women only that will provide the information you need to possibly prevent heart disease and related problems. The screening includes a blood glucose test, blood cholesterol check, blood pressure monitoring, weight evaluation, and personal health assessment.

Date:               Saturday, February 4

Time:               8:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Location:        Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake
9440 Poppy Drive (near Garland Road and North Buckner Boulevard)

Reservations are required for the screening.
Call 866-764-3627 today to make your appointment.

Each year Americans make their list of resolutions for the New Year, and each year many forget those resolutions within a short time. Since many of the most popular resolutions are health-related, Alexander Amby, M.D., family practice physician on the medical staff at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, offers tips for keeping your resolutions this year.

  • Write it down. By putting the resolution on paper, you’re making it more concrete. It may help to post your list where you can see it every day.
  • Keep it short. Don’t put too many resolutions on your list. A short and simple list is much more achievable than one that starts to look like the Gettysburg Address.
  • Break it down. If you want to lose weight, break that resolution down into smaller goals that you can achieve. Most people tend to lose one to two pounds per week with dieting and exercise, so a sub-goal of losing six pounds in one month can be done.
  • Make it personal. Your resolution should be something you want to achieve.
  • Stay positive. Practice positive self-talk as you begin working to reach your goal. Tell yourself what you are doing to help meet your objective.
  • Get some support. Ask your friends and family to help you achieve your goal. They can provide motivation when you need it and cheer you on from the sidelines.

“Regardless of your resolution, the process of taking the goal from thought to action is the same,” adds Dr. Amby. “If you need help, ask your doctor for advice on ways to stop smoking, lose weight, and other health matters.”

A charity Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10 at Times Ten Cellars (6324 Prospect Avenue) and will benefit The Dallas Women's Forum and Alexander Mansion. The Dallas Women's Forum is one of the city's oldest and most active groups with over 100 years of community service, and they also act as the caretakers for Alexander Mansion, a Dallas Landmark.

A seat at the poker tournament will run a player $100 and there will be unlimited $50 re-buys during the first four levels of blinds, as well as a $50 optional add-on at the end of the fourth blind level. However, every dollar spent will be well worth it. All the money that is raised will benefit The Dallas Women's Forum and Alexander Museum.

And, of course, the winners of the tournament won't be going home empty-handed. Everyone at the tournament will be battling for a spot at the coveted final table. Each finalist will be playing for the prizes table, which will have some truly great prizes:

  • 42" HDTV ($600 value)
  • 16GB Apple iPad ($500 value)
  • One Evening Poker Table from Dead Money Poker: Professional dealer, poker table and chips for 10 ($250 value)
  • Bottle of fine French Bordeaux from the Ed Creel collection (priceless)
  • Two Dallas Stars hockey tickets (first level, great seats)
  • Free wine tasting for 10 from Times Ten Cellars ($250 value)
  • Gourmet Beer Basket from The World Beer Company ($150 value)

But, the night isn't over for those that don't make it to the final table. With a $20 donation, players can get a seat at single table 9-player sit and go's and have the opportunity to win additional prizes.

The event begins at 7:00 p.m. but players can arrive early at 6:30 p.m. to play at the warm-up table. This is a good time to get a refresher course on the game and to pick up the basics and get some last minute coaching.

Anyone interested in participating in the tournament should contact Rick Salmeron via email (ricksalmeron@sbcglobal.net) or phone (214-923-7283). The tournament is in less than a week, so send your email as soon as possible to reserve a seat and get your registration papers.

BubbleLife has already written about holiday safety for the family, but now it’s time to move onto pets. With so many people coming and going, it’s easy for pets to get lost in the mix. Here is some safety advice for our four-legged friends.

DOGS

  • More so than any other season, winter is when the most dogs are lost. That’s because dogs can lose their scent in the snow or ice. When taking your dog for a walk, make sure to keep them on their leash the entire time and make sure they have a collar with dog tags.
  • After your dog has had its fill of frolicking in the snow, be sure to wipe the remaining snow and ice off their legs and stomach. This isn’t because of the cold but because dogs can ingest salt, antifreeze or other dangerous chemicals while licking their paws. Antifreeze, especially, is the most deadly due to its sweetness and high toxicity.
  • Don’t cut or shave your dog’s hair in the winter. A longer coat will keep your dog warm. And if you own a short-haired breed, consider getting your dog a doggie sweater with a turtleneck that will cover from the neck to the base of the tail. It may look silly but your dog will thank you for it.
  • Dogs need extra protein in their diet during the winter months to keep their health and fur in top form. This is doubly important if your dog is active in outdoor activities.

CATS

  • Even if your cat is generally an indoor cat, try and keep them inside during the winter. Felines can freeze, become lost and get injured or killed before you have time to react.
  • Unlike dogs, cats don’t take kindly to being stuffed in a sweater, even if it does keep them warm. So if your cat refuses to stay indoors, build them a dry, warm cat shelter that they can take refuge in. Make sure the shelter is insulated and line the bottom with some old clothes or even some hay. Be sure to also raise the shelter a few inches off the ground to prevent the cold from leeching the heat away through the ground.
  • Feral cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars during the winter to stay warm. However, when the motor is started, the cat can get seriously injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood to give the cat a fair warning.
  • Don’t leave your cat (or dog) in a car while you do any last minute shopping. During the winter, a car will quickly lose its warm and become more of a refrigerator – holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
  • Make sure your cat has a warm place to sleep at night that is off the floor and away from drafts. Even a simple blanket on the couch will be more than enough to keep your cat cozy and warm.

SIGNS OF HYPOTHERMIA

  • Violent shivering followed by listlessness
  • Weak pulse
  • Lethargy
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Problems breathing
  • Lack of appetite
  • Coma
  • Cardiac arrest

HYPOTHERMIA TREATMENT

  • Immediately bring your pet out of the cold and into a warm room.
  • Give your pet a solution of warm water mixed with four teaspoons of honey or sugar. If your pet is too weak to drink, put two teaspoons of corn syrup on your pet’s gums. This will help as an energy boost.
  • Place warm, towel-wrapped water bottles against your pet’s stomach, armpits and chest and then wrap them up in a blanket. Do NOT use hairdryers, heating pads or electric blankets. This could cause burns or surface blood vessels to dilate.
  • Get in touch with your veterinarian immediately.

SIGNS OF FROSTBITE

  • Pale, gray or blue skin first
  • Red, puffy skin later
  • Pain in ear, tails or paws (extremities) when touched
  • Skin stays cold
  • Shriveled skin

FROSTBITE TREATMENT

  • Apply warm (not hot) water for at least 20 minutes to the frostbitten area.
  • Be very gentle with the affected areas. Do NOT massage or rub the areas as this could cause permanent damage.
  • Get in touch with your veterinarian immediately.

Pinot’s Palette is an art studio created to celebrate the Picasso in us all. Although some of us may not be artistically gifted, doesn’t mean we still don’t like to express ourselves through art. Anyone who enjoys art and wants to paint can create their own masterpiece at Pinot’s Palette. Our artists guide class participants step-by-step through the featured painting, ensuring everyone completes their masterpiece by the end of class.

Our classes are designed to appeal to painters of all levels—even those who have never picked up a paintbrush. Classes are held in the evenings every Thursday, Friday and Saturday with occasional classes on other nights during the week and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Although Pinot’s Palette is a BYOB (bring your own booze) art entertainment studio for adults, we do have specific classes just for teens and children.

Looking to Get Out of the House after the Holidays

After all that preparation for the holidays and gift giving, give yourself some time to unwind and enjoy some painting. Pinot’s Palette will give you the opportunity to paint a Whimsical Fall landscape (December 27th from 7:00-9:00PM) and a Sassy Chic floral painting (December 29th from 7:00-9:00PM). If you are interested, go to www.PinotsPalette.com/Lakewood or call Pinot’s Palette today before the classes are sold out.
